What are the chances of sex being wrong at a 28 weeks scan?

Just that really, we weren't going to find out originally and said no when asked at the 20 week scan.

Evidently though patience is not a virtue for me, and when I was asked to attend a 28 week growth scan I couldn't help myself and asked.
I know it is never 100% but I was absolutely adamant I was having another boy (have 2 boys and a girl) but the sonographer said she thinks girl, she said she saw 3 lines but she didn't sound overly confident.

At 28 weeks if it were a boy though, would you expect to be able to quite confidently be able to see something? I would truly not be bothered either way, we have bought loads of gorgeous gender neutral clothes already and are not likely to do the whole pink/blue thing we are just thankful for a healthy baby at the ripe old age of 42, but we want to tell the other children and although my teen boys won't be fussed either my DD 10 really wanted a sister and I don't want to tell her in case it's wrong and then her resent a boy if that makes sense.

Anyone any ideas on accuracy at this stage?

They should normally be able to get an accurate reading at that stage, but there are of course always rare occasions when it’s wrong, and if she didn’t sound overly confident maybe it’s best to wait until another scan or until baby is here.
glad all is looking healthy.

You could always go for a private scan for confirmation?

I would say they don’t usually say anything unless they are confident in what they are seeing in my experience.

Daisychainsx · 11/11/2022 13:15

Our boy scan was glaringly obvious at 22 weeks, but every baby is different and I suppose position has a lot to do with it!
I was 10000% convinced I was having a girl before the scan!😅

gamerchick · 11/11/2022 13:17

I had scans that late on and there was a 'definitaly a boy' that went round the room as the scan went past. It was unmistakable. It's probably easier to tell with boys and not be sure with girls.

Still you'll find out soon enough.

Thanks all, we have told the kids and just had to reiterate it is not 100%. Only 12 ish weeks to go till we know for certain I guess. 😀

They are always a bit more hesitant with declaring girls because something might just be hiding, depending on the position - whereas if you can definitely see a penis there isn't much to quibble over. At all my scans they said they were 'almost certain' it was a girl but would never commit to 100%, and she was indeed a girl.

DadOfTheMoment · 11/11/2022 16:38

I was always told a willy tends to be a more "positive" diagnosis and so tends to be right, but if it's not seen on the scan and they assume it's a girl it still could be there.

My friend was told she was havi a girl at her 20 week scan

Bought everything pink

Then she had a boy 🤦🏻‍♀️

Nothing is 100% I don't think

I’m sure I’ve read that accurate sexing becomes very difficult after a certain point once the baby gets bigger and has less room to move, as it becomes much harder to zoom out and get a good view of the genitals. I’m afraid I have no idea when this is, however! We had multiple late scans with DS which all confirmed that he was a boy. I think it’s trickier with girls.

AmyAW · 11/11/2022 20:11

We had the 'I think it's a girl' response too! It's been playing on our minds ever since... We'd be delighted with either but it really caught us off guard.

Frazzled2207 · 11/11/2022 20:14

I think it’s always harder to be certain for girls.

at 20 weeks there was no doubt whatsoever that ds was a boy. I think you can only get that kind of certainty with boys.

congratulations! I’d just be telling the others that you think it’s a girl but not sure

YippieKayakOtherBuckets · 11/11/2022 20:33

It’s possible to be very sure of a girl’s sex if you’re lucky enough to be scanned in a well-equipped department. We were shown DD’s ovaries in our 20-week scan at King’s London ten years ago.

YippieKayakOtherBuckets · 11/11/2022 20:35

I have to say I wouldn’t have told a sibling who had a strong preference for one sex with that kind of uncertainty from the sonographer, but as that ship has sailed I think you were right to emphasise the caveats.

Georgeskitchen · 11/11/2022 20:56

They seem err on the side of caution and say they think it's a boy/girl but don't buy boy/girl stuff on the strength of it because they sometimes get it wrong.
I asked the question in my 4the and final pregnancy, they told me they were 80% it was a boy . When I saw my GP I relayed this information and her words were "if its 80% boy it will be a boy"
She was correct 😅😅

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 11/11/2022 23:19

I had my 22 week scan at kings college hospital and then said she was a girl. When I asked how they could tell they said they could see her labia. I was amazed at how they could see such detail.

Littlekel84 · 11/11/2022 23:36

Can anyone tell from my 14 week scan if this little bean is a boy or girl? I will be having my scan at 21 weeks this monday to find out ❤️
