Our bodies ability

Do you think our bodies have a natural way of protecting baby/embryo until a missed period? I stupidly drank equivalent to a large glass of wine over the course of 2 days before I knew and I am very concerned. I have had lots of reassurance from other mums and medical professionals so I am now trying to focus of what they have all said!

It's fine. You shouldn't drink loads deliberately but the placenta doesn't form to connect to the baby for a while and even when it does, you'd need more than a large glass over two days to do any harm.

To put it in context, my mother's generation were told to drink Guinness regularly in pregnancy for the nutrition!

No because otherwise foetal alcohol wouldn't be a thing.

However, before the placenta forms you'll be fine.

I was on holiday and drinking loads when I was (unknowingly) newly pregnant with dc2. In contrast I was teetotal when dc3 was conceived but sadly miscarried at 11 weeks so I think it's the luck of the draw really.
Agree with pp re stout being encouraged in previous generations, although in my mum's case it was Mackesons!
Best of luck @rose19rose Flowers

The placenta wouldn’t have formed anyway so it’s not an issue. Also, even if it was later and it had formed, one glass of wine over the course of two days is really not that much. Not suggesting women should drink while pregnant but not that long ago, the NHS guidance would have said that amount was fine.

Stop worrying x

This is what I mean, protects before a missed period.

Your placenta won't have formed yet - I wouldn't worry

Mrmoody · 03/11/2022 10:23

All 3 times I've been pregnant I knew because I drank wine and didn't enjoy it, I've had 1 termination, 1 very healthy boy and currently 14 weeks pregnant. Try not to stress!

Thank you so much! Everyone has been so helpful and reassured me, I will now focus on being as healthy as I can!

Yes it’s crazy how everyone would smoke and drink!

Thank you for replying! I think that this must be common accident/worry and I am sure some women drink heavily without knowing! X
