Miscarriage Clinic - How to get access

Hi everyone, I wanted to pick some England based brains with regards to NHS. (Not sure if rest of UK might operate differently! No hate)

I have had two previous miscarriages and this morning found out I am pregnant again. I’m obviously full of happiness, but just wanting to do everything I can to go to full term.

From what I have been told, 3 miscarriages is when the NHS step in to assist, however just wondering if there’s anything I could do to get access sooner to support me? I’m reading all sorts on here with people on different medications and supplements which I would love to explore, I just really can’t afford to go private (from what I am seeing £2000+)

Any advice would be great, if there is any more affordable options or a route in to help assist with this pregnancy I would be really greatful.

I'd ask your GP if they'd prescribe cyclogest (progesterone pessaries) - bring the NICE guideline and point out what it suggests. Our fertility clinic put patients who have had even just one loss on cyclogest as they said some evidence it might help, no evidence or reason for any downside.

Here you go: www.midirs.org/latest-news/news/2021/updated-nice-guidance-on-miscarriage-using-progesterone-to-help-prevent-pregnancy-loss/ recommends 2x400mg per day, up to 16 weeks

Also baby aspirin, you can buy and start that yourself immediately, it could help!

Recommend calling up the Tommy's helpline and speaking to a tommys midwife, they're so helpful. As others have said you can also ask GP for progesterone. Also if you don't manage to get it prescribed beforehand, if you do start to have bleeding in this pregnancy go straight to a&e/early pregnancy unit and quote the Tommy's trial and demand progesterone, as they should give it as best practice now if you've had two previous losses and bleeding in a subsequent pregnancy.

If you are in or near Coventry, the Tommy's Coventry clinic takes women after they've had 2 miscarriages not 3.

I also used cramp bark tea ☕ for the first few weeks, I got the info from the website natural fertility info. It's a great website with lots of natural tips.

Best of luck and congrats!

Thank you all so much! This has given me loads of hope. Will call GP first thing on Monday.

@pinkpepperclove after 3 miscarriages myself, I went on progesterone and baby aspirin 75mg for the first trimester when I found out I'm expecting again. This one has stuck so far, I think they definitely made a big difference. Good luck

MadamMaltesers · 29/10/2022 15:45

You could go to a private GP to get the progesterone quicker, because ideally need to take the progesterone and aspirin as soon as

mummatara · 29/10/2022 19:58

You could ring your local EPU and ask if they will help you in any way. I've had 2 MC and they told me when I get pregnant again to ring them straight away and they will monitor and support me as much as possible. I know it does depend on your hospital trust but def can't hurt to ask.

Do you mind sharing how many weeks you are? This is really helpful

This is a great idea. I might try, they are so lovely there.

@pinkpepperclove I'm currently 35 weeks.

pinkpepperclove · 30/10/2022 08:56

Tried via private doctor. They said they are unable to help at this point as the guidance says I have to go for a scan before they can prescribe.

They are writing to my GP for a referral to the Early pregnancy unit, but might reach out myself

Update: this is proving a lot more difficult than planned. EPU saying get prescription from GP.

GP saying Obstetrician have to give green light 😭
