Hello

I've got my booking appointment on Wednesday and I'm wondering what to expect?

Thank you x

Bloods to be taken, height and weight, and a lot about your medical history, family medical history and a bit about the fathers family history. It's pretty much just getting as much information as they can so they can assess what extra help you may need in pregnancy.

Cw112 · 28/10/2022 21:51

What pp said, they'll also scan you and decide whether you'll be midwife led, consultant led or shared care and you can ask questions. I think I needed to do a urine sample as well. I had a tilted pelvis so when they tried to scan me they couldn't find anything at all which I hadn't expected and really scared me but then all was fine.

AmDram322 · 28/10/2022 21:52

There won’t be a scan.

Puddlepup · 28/10/2022 21:56

Medical history of you and the father, questions about your home life/lifestyle, height and weight measured. No scan.

IWillBeWaxingAnOwl · 28/10/2022 21:56

@Cw112 in my healthboard (NHS Scotland) community midwives do not scan at all.

@elm26 they ask loads of Q's, screen for alcohol or drug misuse, domestic violence, height, weight, urine test, blood test, health history, pregnancy history

Mine was lots of questions. Form filling and half a trees worth of leaflets. If you look up your city name and 'maternity services' you should get details of what your local trust does. This is what mine says:

8+ - 10 week’s √ Booking appointment with midwife
· Full medical and social history, individualised plan of care made.
· Programme of antenatal care explained
· Blood pressure, height, weight, Body Mass Index (BMI) recorded.
· Test urine for protein and glucose, send “mid-stream specimen of urine” (MSU) for infection screening.
· Blood tests and scans discussed, offered and taken.
· Information given on diet, lifestyle changes, pregnancy care services, maternity benefits and screening tests.
Approximately 4 weeks after booking appointment or as soon as an appointment is available.√

  • *Dating scan / first trimester screening scan and screening blood test (at hospital) Explain purpose of detailed scan at 20-22 weeks

Paperwork.

At some point they'll probably get you on your own and ask (words to the effect of) whether you're in an abusive relationship and need any help. This is standard procedure.

My midwife also told DP how important it is to be especially nice and considerate to a woman during pregnancy.

YellowTreeHouse · 28/10/2022 22:10

@Cw112 There will be no scan. NHS only offers two routine scans at 12 and 20 weeks.

FatAgainItsLettuceTime · 28/10/2022 22:10

Just remembered, I was there with DH, loads of questions about sexual history and whether there was a history of STIs then she asked whether I knew who the babies dad is. I replied 'my husband, and honestly if he wasn't now wouldn't be the time to tell him'

girlmom21 · 28/10/2022 22:15

You don't have a scan or blood tests.

They just take all your details, medical history and all family history from both sides.

They might ask for a urine sample.

ZooMount · 28/10/2022 22:24

As above. Your partner doesn't need to be there, I never took mine to any appointments. Obviously they can if you want them to but they don't need to be, just make sure you know if there's any family history of anything major.

Ah must depend on what part of uk you're in then, in NI our booking appointment is at 12 weeks and the scan is done at the very beginning of the appointment to confirm you're pregnant before they do anything else. I had to go back at 13 wks to finish my booking appointment because the scan hadn't worked for us and they wouldn't do any of the paperwork without it. We also get a lot more scans than 12 and 20 wks. Crazy how different it is for still being NHS. Just depends on where op is based then.

OttilieKnackered · 28/10/2022 23:56

It definitely varies. Mine was recent (6 weeks ago) and was mainly questions with blood and urine tests (and a co2 test). Def no scan, and no height and weight. Those were done at the scan which was 2 weeks later.

Aliceinwonderland5 · 29/10/2022 18:17

I had my booking app at 8 weeks (only a month ago), I'm England, if it matters.

I just answered a bunch of questions about myself, medical history, family history (both mine and DH), what I did for a job, what partner did etc. Long winded and boring, didn't take DH and glad I didn't as it would have been a bit pointless for him!

She gave me a pot, went and did a urine sample there and then. Then took bloods to test for what blood group I am, and then a bunch of other stuff like HIV and other infectious diseases. She gave me my pregnancy notes which were pretty much blank and the letter with my 12 week scan app.

Just for fun I'd booked a private scan the same day which DH did come to. Much more fun and we found out it was twins.

12wk scan and midwife app straight after had much more info and much more fun.

LemonDrizz · 29/10/2022 20:04

Just to say I have my booking scan on Wednesday too, and was going to ask the same question! So thanks for beating me to it :)

elm26 · 29/10/2022 21:17

Thanks everyone!

DH isn't coming with me as he's at work and I've go to leave work to attend then go back so thought it was pointless as I know we don't get scans by midwives in this area.

We've booked a private scan on Friday when I'll be just over 10 weeks as it's an excuse for me to check on baby (and see how much they've grown hopefully!)

Congratulations everyone on your pregnancies and @Aliceinwonderland5 twins! Amazing 💛

You're welcome @LemonDrizz 😉
