Losing weight?

Hi all,

Just before my pregnancy I weighed 19 stone 5 lbs (lost about 6 lbs just before I went on holiday). I'm now 12 weeks pregnant and weigh 17 stone 5. A mixture of really healthy eating, trying to be a little more active, and a few weeks of really bad food aversions. From what I've read, weight loss can be expected in the first trimester when very overweight. Can I continue to lose weight in the second trimester (1-2 lbs a week), or is this unsafe? I gained 3 stone after having covid and being hospitalised twice. I've had really poor health and lung related issues as a result. I've never felt better though shedding some of this weight and if I can, I'd like to continue eating really healthily and staying active (but not overdoing it) after months of feeling debilitated. The bonus of shedding a little weight would be an added, particularly as it's still very high. Smile

I weighed around 16s7lbs when I fell pregnant. Lost abit more than half a stone in my first trimester. Put on around 8lbs on at the beginning of my second trimester and now at almost 27 weeks (and after a 2 weeks all inclusive holiday) I weigh 16s3lb 🤷🏻‍♀️ Baby is growing fine. No sickness. Felt quite nauseous during my first trimester and so I was eating less but my appetite has increased in my second trimester and I’d say I’m eating around the same amount I was pre pregnancy.

I weighed 17st9lbs when I first got pregnant, few months of hg brought that down to 17st3lbs and I'm still at that weight now even though I'm 35 weeks along so I've been losing a little weekly with gd diet. They haven't been concerned about it provided I keep up with my pregnancy vitamins and folic acid and eat enough healthy foods and enough carbs to avoid ketosis. Speak to your midwife if you're worried but baby will be taking in all the nutrition first and you'll get the seconds.

As long as you’re eating a healthy balanced diet and aren’t in calorie deficit / doing low carb then you should be all good even if you do continue losing a little weight :) but worth checking with your midwife also.

I have just had my booking in appointment at 10 weeks, I weighed 17 stone at 5ft 7 so my BMI is 36. I’m kind of disgusted with myself and wished I had got into better shape before getting pregnant. My BP was also a little high. Isit safe to lose a little weight during pregnancy?

Well done for losing so much weight @blondie185 . I am very impressed and you have inspired me a bit.

I've lost over 3 stone in this pregnancy now I'm really chuffed. To be fair I don't ever gain weight being pregnant as the sickness is so intense but I needed that push to lose it and it's pregnancy that's helped. My midwife isn't concerned and all has been ok. I've had growth scans and baby is fine.

Hi all. Currently 4 1/2 months now and baby is doing well. Growing as expedited. Now down to 17 stone 1 which is really surprising because my appetite is definitely back, though still off some foods. I'm thinking it may be down to just healthier choices in general and not drinking wine! I'd probably have a glass of red wine most week days and definitely more at the weekend! I'm experiencing really bad pelvic girdle pain at the minute though so mobility is really limited. At its worst I can't shuffle more than a few steps without yelping, so I've been signed off work for some rest to see if that helps. The loss has definitely slowed down since I last posted.

@blondie185 I'm 24 weeks and still 6lbs down from pre pregnancy, was 12lbs 🤣. But don't forget that you have also technically gained the wieght of the baby, extra fluid, placenta etc so you've actually lost more than you think! As long as you are sticking to a balanced diet then you are doing great. Feel you with the pain...I'm very tempted to get signed off work for a bit now as everything is painful and id rather the limited amount I can do...is done at home!

@Dinnerdate1 that’s amazing! Have you just been cutting down on the rubbish foods, I have another midwife app next week so I may ask about the losing weight during pregnancy!

blondie185 · 30/11/2022 13:59

Cutting out rubbish foods (not entirely) and not drinking wine basically. Slight more movement maybe, until this sciatica recently! It has slowed down though massively now I'm in the second trimester!

@1989shorn Thank you. I'm actually living of toblerones at the moment! But it's all I can sort of nibble on. I will eat healthier though as every time I give birth within a few months I've put it all back on again. I have been walking more as well could be that helping x

Hi OP,
I just wanted to check that "eating really healthily" doesn't mean Low carb/low fat or vegan (without supplementary fortified foods). What eating healthily means to one person is different to another but your babies developing body and brain need the full range of nutrients. Unless your health care professionals advise otherwise eat well from a wide range of foods. Obviously no harm cutting treats with no nutritional value anyway.

blondie185 · 30/11/2022 14:42

Agreed. No conscious effort to cut any food group here. 😊 Nice mix of meat, veggies, rice etc. Occasional puddings as I seem to have developed a sweet tooth! I did go off meat for 3 weeks earlier on but that's fine away now.

Do you know the sex of your baby? Apparently having a girl can cause a sweet tooth! I don’t know what I’m having but keep dreaming about being in a sweet shop buying pic and mix 😂😂

We find out on the 22nd Dec! I've had cravings for Rowntrees ice lollies haha!
