Saw this morning I made a bowl of strawberries they were fine until I got to one in which I ate half and after I swallowed had the after taste of cat pee🤢
should I be concerned or is it just a gone off piece? will baby be okay?

I’m sure you’ll be fine!

Frida9 · 28/10/2022 12:28

You'll be fine op, I have to change my cats litter tray all the time because my husband works away. Just don't eat any more of the strawberries especially unwashed.

Firsttimemum27weeks · 28/10/2022 12:44

Thank you, yes I did wash them under the tap and removed the storks three were fine until I ate that one and it was literally so pungent! Slightly worried if it will affect the baby if I’m honest

You washed them, you be fine.

Firsttimemum27weeks · 28/10/2022 12:50

Yes popped them under running water for a few seconds and then cut the storks off but one just happened to have a after taste… as in sudden panic I was worried that I’ve just eaten something that’s gonna affect the baby!
(before you think I’m nuts I have anxiety which is being helped by a wonderful counsellor.)

It wasn’t cat pee, though, probably just a bit of ammonia, so nothing that can harm the baby at all.

Do I need to contact my midwife at all?

Do you have a cat? What’s your profession? Regularly in the past eat cured meat?

I ask because if yes to a number of the above then you likely already have it. It’s only an issue if you get it for the first time during PG.

Something like 70% of French women have already had toxo due to their lovely charcuterie diets. So over there they panic less about it.

Im a gardener (it’s found in soils), with a cat and eat a lot of that and so I was tested and found to not be at risk so I continued to work and eat dried meat throughout pregnancy.

Try not to panic.

Hello yes I have cats -
these were store bought strawberries

SalviaOfficinalis · 28/10/2022 13:10

I think it’s only cat poo you can get it from, so if you just ate cat wee you should be fine.

More likely it was just a bitter strawberry… it’s not really strawberry season anymore (in the UK anyway).

I’m sure you’ll be fine, don’t worry.

LemonSwan · 28/10/2022 13:11

If you have cats it’s highly likely you already have it. Don’t worry.

But you can ask your midwife to do you a toxoplasmosis antibody test to put your mind at ease for the rest of pregnancy.

Make sure it’s an antibody test and not a live toxo test of positive or negative. Hope that makes sense.

I hope not, I have half the punnet left and just had a quick sniff and cannot smell the cat pee so must of just been a mushy one???

I asked my midwife and they said the NHS does not do antibody tests for toxoplasmosis and that she didn't know how I would go about having the test.

LemonSwan · 28/10/2022 14:23

They do do it. I had one.

Here’s an nhs page on one www.nwlpathology.nhs.uk/tests-database/toxoplasma-screen/

TBH they might not do it unless occupationally required. I was a gardener and so exposed daily through work. If it’s just because I wanted to eat charcuterie or was freaking out about my cat they might not have done it.

Firsttimemum27weeks · 28/10/2022 14:49

I’ve spoken to my midwife she said it’s possibly just pregnancy tastebuds! Advised to drink plenty and hopefully I’m not sick with it!
