Pregnancy weight gain depression

Hello, panicking a bit about the amount of weight I have gained so far. I started off at 165lb (75kg) and now at 185lb (84kg). I’m 23 weeks in and not sure how to make the weight gain stop. It’s really bringing me down and making me so upset as i battled to lose weight for such a long time before becoming pregnant. I’m a FTM. Please tell me how much weight you put on in your previous pregnancies and how much you AUTOMATICALLY lost afterwards (so by doing nothing but giving birth and breastfeeding if you did) just trying to reassure myself with how much of this weight will automatically eventually fall off. Please help 😭

I gained 1 stone. Baby was 6.5lbs. I was able to fit into my usual clothes straight away.

You don't have to over eat in pregnancy.

fellrunner85 · 27/10/2022 22:44

I put on around 2st in my first pregnancy and around 4st in my second. I was running throughout both pregnancies and eating well, so it's still a mystery to me as to how I gained so much the second time. I think a lot of it was water as I sort of inflated all over.
Anyway, I lost it all, and more, within a few months - basically as soon as I got back to running high mileage again.

Don't stress.

I am a runner & was really worried about weight gain & inactivity but somehow managed to run most of the way through my first pregnancy. I still gained a lot of weight though.

Although i tried not to overeat, in the first four months at least, I could only stomach beige foods & had to graze to keep the neausea at bay.

I started at 72kg & very quickly within first 14 weeks put on 4kg. Then more slowly I put on the rest. I didn't weigh myself at the end but I can say that 3 days after birth I weighed 75kg. Baby was 6lb.

You won't believe the size of your placenta until you see it & there's a whole load of fluid etc.

As long as you're not eating everything in sight & trying to be as active as your pregnancy will allow then I think there's very little you can do about it.

I'm pregnant for second time (14 weeks) & i swear my previously deflated boobs are massive.
Your body will do what it needs to....

I put on around 3 stone with my first (20 months ago), lost about 13lbs of that in the first week after birth (baby was 7lb 14oz, I carried a lot of fluid), I lost most of the remaining weight over 3 months and I do think it was due to breastfeeding, walking and not eating crap / too much junk food.
I'm currently 30 weeks pregnant and put on just under 2 stone. I think I've put on less weight this time due to running around after a toddler and not being sat in front of a laptop during a lockdown, so we are out and about. I suffer with bad SPD both times so exercise is limited to just walking. My weight gain in both pregnancies was rapid for the first trimester up until about 20 weeks then plateaued, expecting it to ramp up again in about 4 weeks.
You will lose the weight if you try not to eat too much junk food postpartum and get walking as soon as you feel able to. I was only about 3 lbs heavier than I was before my first pregnancy (pretty much 2 years apart), when I found out I was pregnant again. I did go back to the gym as well at about 9 months postpartum, but lost the weight prior to that.
Just try and eat healthy. But yeah I put on loads of weight first time and I'm only 5ft 2. Even though I lost the weight I'm still a dress size bigger but I'm OK with that! Try not to worry.

I gained one stone with both my pregnancies, both children born weighing 5lb 3oz and honestly my stomach was flat straight away, got told by the midwives that everyone on the ward hated me for that 😂. Just luck of the draw in some respects but I also didn't over eat during my pregnancies and stayed relatively active.

Backofthenet20 · 28/10/2022 04:01

I gained about 60lb in pregnancy. Lost 45lb in 10 days after giving birth. I had preeclampsia and had a lot of fluid. Was swollen everywhere. I lost the next stone over the next few months.

Endofmytetherfinally · 28/10/2022 04:56

I put on 8kg for my first baby (similar size to you 72-80kg) and was down to 70 by month 3. I didn't exercise apart from walking but was constantly actively trying to eat enough to BF. I lost almost 10kg in the first 10 days. This time I started heaving (75kg) but like my 1st I actually lose weight in the first trimester due to sickness. Will be trying hard not to go over 80kg as I'm not planning on BF this time.

sjxoxo · 28/10/2022 05:13

I went from 55kgs to 92kgs when I was pregnant last year.. I lost about 8KG automatically. I then lost nothing more until I stopped breastfeeding when baby was 6 months. I felt very much that I kept all the weight and fat when breastfeeding- It was definitely not a weight loss trick for me!!! The opposite. I was very diet and exercise conscious before pregnancy and when pregnant I was so so hungry!!!! And couldn’t manage the exercise I usually did. When baby turned 6m I finally started to lose weight and get rid of the fat suit. I felt so so shit and it’s one of the reasons I’m not sure I’ll have another - I felt the physical part was just horrendous. I’ve got about 10kg left to lose now. Id say try and eat healthily during pregnancy even if it’s really really hard!!! Best of luck Xx

natkasz · 28/10/2022 07:19

I was 73kg when I got pregnant and 92kg shortly before I went into labour. Left hospital weighing 81kg and was back to 73kg within 6 months.

I'm pregnant again and my starting weight was higher (76kg) but I'm trying not to worry about it as I know that as long as I maintain a relatively high diet, the weight will drop off within a few months off giving birth.

GiltEdges · 28/10/2022 07:32

I gained around 3 stone in total. Lost close to a stone instantly (DS was almost 10 lbs) and then a further 3 over the following 2-3 months. It seems to be quite variable, but for me breastfeeding was great for weight loss and I remained a stone lighter than my pre-pregnancy weight until the day I stopped. I’ve since regained that stone, but no more.

otherwayup · 28/10/2022 07:43

I'm quite small, about 57kg and struggle with any weight gain so pregnancy was a shock for me.
I gained rapidly with both of mine and put on about 3 stone both times!
I lost a stone almost immediately after birth and the rest disappeared fairly quickly over the first month or two.
I seemed to hang onto about 1/2 stone of extra weight for the 2 years I breasted but this eventually went too.
I did find it hard to deal with at times but it wasn't as bad as I had feared and I never imagined I would have coped with my body being 3 stone heavier but I did!

Stag82 · 28/10/2022 07:46

I don’t really remember much about baby 1 and 2,

im currently 2 weeks post C-section with number 3. I gained 10kg. Diet wasn’t amazing in pregnancy but I was able to stay active with 10k plus steps and three gym sessions a week. I haven’t weighed myself yet (waiting for week 6 and giving my body time to recover as still have a little swelling). But baby was a little over 4kg and know placenta, fluid will weight a bit too)

Twizbe · 28/10/2022 07:59

I k ow it's hard not to worry, but I really loved the maternity clothes for making my weight gain seem better.

I put on about 4st with both pregnancies. I had complications which meant I could be as active as I was pre pregnancy. That didn't help. But it's ok if that happens to you. I had 9lb babies as well.

I lost about a stone shortly after with peeing, sweating and generally letting it go down.

It then took about 9 months to slowly lose the rest. I did slimming world to help and tried to get back to the gym (hard with a baby/ baby and toddler)

I didn't lose weight from breastfeeding but that wasn't why I was breastfeeding so it didn't bother me.

Now my kids are older and I've stopped breastfeeding / being pregnant I've lost lots of weight and am below my wedding weight finally

FurnitureDisease · 28/10/2022 07:59

Hi OP, would it help you to know I PILED it on 😂

Was a gym rat pre-pandemic and at time of pregnancy a bit heavier than usual

So started at 10 stone (I’m 5ft6 so this is healthy, though higher than usual for me)

Refused to weigh by the end 😂 must have been around 15 stone as I was 13.6 at one of the weigh ins around 32/34 weeks. I went to 42 weeks and was HUGE

No snap-back here and couldn’t exercise due to EMCS but EBF and it’s slowly coming off without any gym / exercise routine added back in yet.

I’m now 20 weeks PP and not sure what I weigh but it’s in the region of 11 stone and I’m feeling much more comfortable.

so about 1 stone to lose to get to pre-pregnancy and 2 stone to my “target”

Im back at work next week and will resume a gym regimen which will massively help

Youll get there OP, I worried too but it just takes time and patience. Be kind to yourself xx

Roseangell · 16/11/2022 21:34

I’m currently 36 weeks pregnant and found out I have gained 3.5 stone! Massive shock as I have always been so body conscious. It’s really tough watching your body change but I am confident that I will get back to my pre pregnancy weight - I’m sure you will too!
I was 10 stone at the start (5ft 8) and now I’m 13.5 stone 😱
I have been terrible with my eating and exercise throughout this pregnancy but it is mentally tough. The first 3 months I had 24hr nausea which led to me feeling very deflated and depressed - started to eat whatever felt good! Then I started to get pelvic girdle pain in the second trimester and have been unable to do much exercise - other than walk the dog once a day. I do count my calories but am eating about 2500 a day with very little movement. All women cope differently in pregnancy but the main thing is that we are keeping our babies safe and creating a whole human! That’s pretty incredible. We can focus on dieting and exercising once our bodies heal. Our bodies are amazing and a lot of women tell me that the weight comes off quite easily if you eat sensible and move often. Don’t fret, you will be absolutely fine.

TheCraicDealer · 16/11/2022 21:42

Honestly didn’t weigh myself with DD and I won’t with this one either. I did put weight on like, a good bit. I did BodyFit Mums starting when I was 12w PP and that got me near enough into my pre pregnancy clothes. It was basically a run of twice weekly fitness classes you can bring baby along with you, good for social aspect during ML as well.

With this one I was bigger to start with (thank you WFH) and I’ve been grazing a lot —of crap— to stave off the nausea. Any time I worry about it I just think “this is a 2023 problem”, and remind myself that I’ll do the classes again when the time wears round. Honestly so long as your midwives are happy with whatever weight gain you’re experiencing it’s the best way to be, rather than stressing about it.

buckingmad · 16/11/2022 21:45

I was 7.5 stone at my booking in appointment and then 10.5 stone when I gave birth. I did a gym class 3-4 times a week throughout my pregnancy, walked 5km a day with the dog and sorted my horse every day, lifting hay bales, mucking out etc. I still put on 3 stone. It made me so upset.

I lost a stone just by giving birth. The next stone fell off within another couple of weeks and I got back to 8 stone about 10 months pp.
