Having my whooping cough vaccine - I’m currently in my third trimester however I’m hearing alof of horror stories around this vaccine and wanted to see if anyone had any side effects with their baby once having it!?

What horror stories? I had mine before my 20 week scan both pregnancies. DS is 4 and has been absolutely fine and I'm sure DD will be absolutely fine too (22 weeks)

NewYorkLassie · 26/10/2022 22:17

Nope. And not heard a single horror story about it either. Not even anything remotely concerning to be honest.

LittleBearPad · 26/10/2022 22:17

I was phoned once DS was born to say the midwife who’d delivered him had whooping cough. Fortunately as I’d had my WC jab in pregnancy DS and I were fine.

Its perfectly safe to have it

Coraline353 · 26/10/2022 22:20

Never heard any horror stories. I had no sure effects from taking it and both of my DC are fine.

NGCO · 26/10/2022 22:21

What horror stories?

UpToMyElbowsInDiapers · 26/10/2022 22:23

Where are you hearing these horror stories???

I had 3 DCs and had the vaccine each time.

More importantly: This is a routine vaccine with decades of evidence behind it. Whooping cough can be deadly to babies.

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 26/10/2022 22:25

I’ve heard horror stories about whooping cough, never the vaccine. Have it !!!

Firsttimemum27weeks · 26/10/2022 22:25

I asked around a lot and did my own research and each time I did it would come up with either someone against it or severe side effects for the baby. Alot we’re also saying to have it earlier so that also got me worried about having it in the third trimester.

My baby is nearly 4 months old. I had the vaccine just after my 20 week scan and he is fine and has no side effects from it. It’s effective from 16-32 weeks so your baby has protection for the first 8 weeks after birth then they have it in their routine vaccinations.

AliceMcK · 26/10/2022 23:01

I’ve never heard horror stories about the vaccine, the only horror stories I’ve heard are the ones about me getting it as a baby.

Are you reading anti vax sites?

Sidge · 26/10/2022 23:05

I don’t know what you’re reading or what the sources are but there are no pertussis vaccine related horror stories lately.

There is however an incredible drop in numbers of neonates with pertussis, and deaths from pertussis in neonates to vaccinated women are nil I believe.

It is a safe and effective vaccine and has no adverse effect on a foetus. The prime to have it is between 20 and 32 weeks ideally.

Firsttimemum27weeks · 26/10/2022 23:18

That’s so reassuring to hear, I feel like I fell down a complete rabbit hole of research some were mum forums, some being just general google! Personally for me it’s just worrying about baby and that it would be safe for them etc.

I had it at 16 weeks 20 scan went perfectly 23 weeks now

ZoeQ90 · 27/10/2022 10:46

You will find someone saying negative about anything if you look long enough. Try not to worry and focus on the evidence.

Cw112 · 27/10/2022 11:00

I had mine around 24 weeks I think and now 35 with no problems so far. I think people recognise that nothing is ever completely risk free but the reason why the vaccine is given in pregnancy now I'd because the risk of your baby contracting whopping cough once born before they can get their vaccine is actually quite high and its such a serious illness for such tiny babies they want to make sure they have immunity before birth. I've never heard of a negative reaction to that vaccine but it will have had to go through rigorous clinical trials to have been approved for use in pregnancy.

Rosesandteacups · 27/10/2022 11:21

Never heard any horror stories. Had it at 16 weeks in my first pregnancy and at 20 weeks in this pregnancy. No issues at all

PinkPlantCase · 27/10/2022 11:23

Never heard any horror stories about this one and will happily have it each time.

And that’s from someone who declines the flu jab! (Not that I think anything’s wrong with women having the flu jab just personal preference)

Cornettoninja · 27/10/2022 11:25

had it at the recommended time when pregnant and everything was fine.

I have however been treated to horrendous descriptions of tiny babies with whopping cough from a doctor friend. She’s not a general alarmist and was passionate about it. That and babies going through withdrawal are the reasons she chose not to specialise in paediatrics.

mummyh2016 · 27/10/2022 12:17

The only horror stories I've ever heard relating to whooping cough is about the babies that caught it.

Firsttimemum27weeks · 27/10/2022 13:53

Thank you everyone - I’ve just come back from having it OUCH!
Hoping all will be okay!
