C-section tomorrow morning - how long will I wait?

Hey guys, I have my ELCS tomorrow at 38 weeks. I was wondering how long I’d have to wait after I go in. I’ve been told to be there by 7:30am, and that there will be 3 women in total that day who will have sections. There’s also the possibility of emergencies. I have GD, they surely won’t make me go last, will they? How do they decide the order and what time was your ELCS?

I’ve stopped eating now from 10pm and I can’t eat or drink anything until after the section.

They triage everyone that day and decide an order. I had to go 2nd as I was fairly risky but needed a blood test to come back first so couldn't go 1st.

PinkPrawns2 · 25/10/2022 22:25

It completely depends on the clinical reason each woman is having a CS, it's usually decided by the consultant first thing. A woman with anything they expect to be more complicated will go first.

Where I worked the first woman usually went to theatre about 8.45, last 11:30ish ? Maybe earlier.

Good luck, hope it all goes smoothly tomorrow!

Laney79 · 25/10/2022 22:25

At my trust they went on clinical need. Mine was maternal choice so other than psychological no medical need. I think I was second down - first I believe had GD. My boy was born at 11.19am.

Idve thought unless there's an emergency you'd be high on the list due to the GD

minticecreamisjustok · 25/10/2022 22:27

Depends on the order they decide, first time i had one it was 9.00am, I said I had a needle phobia and apparently that helped, second section at 2pm! Most are done by early afternoon

SwayingInTime · 25/10/2022 22:30

You can usually drink until 6am - do you have a leaflet or app with the pre op instructions?

lentilly · 25/10/2022 22:30

Its best not to worry about it really. You aren't going to be able to tell who else is having theirs done that day and their need. Or the theatre arrangements etc.

lawandgin · 25/10/2022 22:30

I was 2nd out of 3 on the afternoon list. Baby was small for gestational age but no other issues. GD is likely to put you top of the list though, barring any emergencies or other more serious conditions. Good luck, enjoy it, it's magical!

Adelais · 25/10/2022 22:32

When I had mine I had to be there at 7:30am too but I didn’t actually go into theatre until 3:30pm! I had my gown on ready to go about 10:30, there were 2 of us having an ELCS and I was second but then there several emergencies just as I was about to go in for mine. There was only 1 theatre at the hospital I was at so if there’s 3 or more where you are you probably won’t have to wait long.

ImNotSureAboutThatKev · 25/10/2022 22:32

I as an ‘emergency’ and I waited 2 full days.

AlphaAlpha · 25/10/2022 22:34

This was me. And I was last on the list. I assume a section before mine went a little pear shaped so I didn't go down until midday, I was bloody starving!

quietnightmare · 25/10/2022 22:34

Who knows, don't worry. Your having a baby tomorrow how exciting

Highfivemum · 25/10/2022 22:38

as other have said it will determined by each case. I was first on my last two c sections and was down for 8:30. I took a lot longer on my last one and unfortunately one of the other C sections was cancelled. I was made to feel very bad by one certain midwife !!
good luck tomorrow.

AriettyHomily · 25/10/2022 22:40

How long is a piece of string...depends on clinical need and emergencies.

NoWordForFluffy · 25/10/2022 22:40

I was first on the list but didn't get into theatre until 12 due to some poor woman suffering a terrible tear, just as I was meant to go in at 9am. It took them over 2 hours to stitch her up, then they had to clean before I went in.

Swimbikerun · 25/10/2022 22:40

Mine were at 8.30 am 11.30 am and 6pm! All elective. Take stuff to do, have a sleep. We chose baby names the first time which was a nice way to spend some time together.

Puddlepup · 25/10/2022 22:44

I waited all day for my first one ended up going home at 6:30pm having arrived at 7am and had to come back the next day! So much waiting around, I wasn’t allowed my husband with me to wait (covid) and was in a room on my own it was endless and not to mention the bloody fasting!! It really wasn’t a great experience for me but it also couldn’t be helped. I wasn’t an emergency and it goes on who is most in need which is how it should be. Try not to overthink it and yes do check if you would be allowed a little water tonight/early hours of morning as it will definitely help. I finally had mine at 13:45 the day after I was scheduled but I was at the hospital from 7am the second day too.

Flowerbug1994 · 25/10/2022 22:45

I had mine in June. Went in 7:30 was first down went at 9:35 baby born at 10:37. Just depends on clinical need and how long it takes to get spinal and everything done.
good luck I took iPad to watch some tv when waiting but they come for me as I put the first show on 😂😂

ghettihead · 25/10/2022 22:48

I was first on the list due to type 1 diabetes, baby was born about 11:30.

bluechameleon · 25/10/2022 22:49

I had GD and was put first on the list. DS2 was born soon after 9. But obviously someone else might have higher needs than you.

Snugglemonkey · 25/10/2022 23:02

There is no way to tell. You could end up bumped a day even if there are a lot of emergencies. My son had surgery at 17 months. He had to wait until the last on the list and had no food all day. It was really traumatic as he was starving and just kept sobbing. He was breastfeeding still at the time and was so confused about why I wouldn't feed him.

I hope you don't have long to wait!

Sparklythings1 · 25/10/2022 23:05

At my hospital if anyone has diabetes they are first then it’s in order of medical complications. The first person is in around 9am, then one at 10.30am then a break for lunch with the third around 1pm. Good luck, it was the most amazing day of my life!

quietnightmare · 27/10/2022 08:46

How are you OP?

quietnightmare · 27/10/2022 08:46

How are you OP?

I’m doing great, thank you! It went really well, I was second. The first woman had a few complications so it took a bit longer than expected, but DC was born happy and healthy at 12:33pm last Wednesday. ❤️
