Is 9+1 too late for first appointment with midwife?

Hi All,

I’ve just received my first letters from my self referral.
They’ve booked my bloods in for 9+1 and my scan in for 13+5.
I’m less fussed about the scan as I will have privately at 7 and 10+5 (if we hopefully hold) but should I be worried about the bloods being that late?

No

Nope, I had my booking in at 9 weeks. As far as I recall, the booking in can be anywhere from 8 to 12 weeks, usually between 8 and 10

Perfectly normal

I had mine at 9 weeks.

Perfectly timed IMO. My first, I had midwife appointment past 11 weeks. Second, just gone 10 weeks.

Bang on time I'd say

The scan is the time sensitive thing if you want screening, not the booking bloods.

Sounds ok! Just remember though if you are overweight you may need a higher dose of folic acid than standard. I put on weight between pregnancies and didn’t realise the dose I’d been on was too low until my midwife appointment.

For my first pregnancy, the earliest you usually had a positive test was after 6 weeks! Many women had early miscarriages which they took as later periods because they didn’t know they were actually pregnant.
For my second, 10 years later, you could buy home tests but they only picked up a pregnancy after about 2 weeks of a missed period.

I was actually 9 weeks pregnant with my first before my test was positive!

That’s great! Thanks so much all 🙏🏻
@abyssofwoah I checked my BMI yesterday and I’m classed as a healthy weight (albeit the higher end 😂) 24.9 I believe my BMI is.
I find it crazy I’m a size 8/10 dress and I’m being told to watch my weight 🤦🏻‍♀️

Good point - the current advice is that you need a higher dose if your bmi is 30 or above. You don't need to wait see your midwife though, just need to speak to your gp (I actually didn't even speak to mine - just put a request in through the online system and he prescribed it without an appointment)

Bloods is fine. Cut off for NT measurements at the scan is 14 weeks.
