Has anyone used one? Are they any good?

I purchased some MAM bottles. Used TT with DS and was reading the instructions on the MAM bottles when it said you shouldn't add boiling water straight to the bottles and instead should wait 30 minutes for the freshly boiled water to cool down a bit before pouring into the bottles.

I'm having twins so don't feel like I can wait 30 minutes for the kettle to cool down.

The Perfect Prep is absolutely bloody brilliant, I wouldn't be without it and definitely not with twins! I vividly remember how stressful I found a screaming baby even while waiting the few minutes for the PP to be done. Counting out the right number of spoonfuls was sometimes too much for me!

Change the filters using branded ones (don't be tempted by cheap copies) when it tells you to, and run the cleaning programme regularly.

I bought a meat thermometer to check the temperature of the water (also useful when using flasks out and about) as I was a bit obsessive about safety. It was absolutely fine - the water shouldn't be boiling, it should just be above 70 degrees.

We took ours on holiday (to a holiday cottage) with an 8 month old, that's how essential I found it 😂

Perfect prep is the best baby purchase I made! Makes a bottle in 2 mins it's a life saver especially at night!

For twins I imagine it will make your life a million times easier. You can often pick them up second hand on Facebook/eBay so may be worth a look if you're not sure you'll use/like it

Best money spent ever!! It really did save me. You'll always get people who say they're not recommended but they really are amazing!

My plan is to take a flask of boiled water and bottles of cooled boiled water to bed with us, measure some hot water to mix with the formula then add the measured amount of cooled boiled to get the temp down. Know we’ll need to play around with how much hot to cold makes the right temp and can then measure the right amount of cold for each feed before bed so it’s only measuring the hot at the time. Think that would work without the expense of the perfect prep and the supposed risks as we could make sure there was enough hot going in at a high enough temp to sterilise the formula. Or am I missing something?

You'd just need to check that the flask of boiling water is above 75 degrees.

@shivawn , I pack mine!

Thank you. It's a toss up between the prep machine and the rapid cool at the moment.

Thank you for all the tips about the prep machine.

I'm a bit rigorous with cleaning anyway and wouldn't buy an unbranded filter. I have my midwife tomorrow so will also ask her opinion on both.

One thing I would say is every midwife will say something different. I had no consistency with the person I saw before or after birth. Whether it was perfect prep, advise about feeding, tongue tie (went private in the end) none of them agreed Hmm xx

Because the NHS don't recommend them I'd be shocked if your midwife is able to give any opinion other than to say don't use it.

I would just check the temperature of the hot shot regularly. My LG was being sick a lot so our HV recommended ditching the prep machine, we did and the sickness was reduced. I checked the temp of the hot shot and it was only reaching 65c. It works for some and not for other. Aslong as you keep an eye on the temp, clean it regularly and only use Tommee tippee filters, my HV said alot of people were buying cheap filters and they weren’t working aswell

Loved it and have kept for the next one. A god send for night feeds

cherrymilkshake · 24/10/2022 14:46

Breastfeeding failed after 5 days for us and so the prep machine was absolutely a lifesaver! It just takes the stress off of what is already stress (waking up in the middle of the night to feed a crying baby), so you can concentrate on everything else.

Our health visitor gave us the whole "well they're not recommended because this and that"- I'm glad I didn't listen and went with it.

As PPs have said just make sure you clean it etc when it tells you to! X

FlounderingFruitcake · 24/10/2022 14:48

I’m the only person I know to have bottle fed and bought a perfect prep. Everyone else I knew bought 2- one for the kitchen and one for upstairs 😂
I’ve never heard of anyone having a problem with them IRL. As others have said clean regularly and no knock off filters.

I also really wouldn’t bother asking the midwife, they can’t recommend anything other than breast feeding except maybe at a push using only ready made formula (expensive) or making each bottle completely from scratch whilst also saying feed on demand (complete contradiction). I’m sure they don’t mean to be so unhelpful, it’s probably just that their hands are tied by the NHS guidelines and they can’t deviate.

Yes, this was my experience too. It's incredibly anxiety-inducing when all you want to do is the best for your baby, but today's health visitor is horrified by the advice you got from a midwife yesterday. Such a head-fuck when you're already sleep-deprived and struggling.

Caspianberg · 24/10/2022 17:56

I would actually just make several bottles at a time and fridge.

you can see on nhs it says either make fresh each time, OR make several with fresh hot water, cool and store at the back of the fridge. You could then just use a bottle warmer or just have flask of hot water to pour into pot and stand ready made bottle in to quickly warm

1994girl · 24/10/2022 18:08

I've got a 4 month old and have the TT advanced prep machine with MAM bottles. Best thing ever.

SparkyBlue · 24/10/2022 19:38

I just made up batches of bottles and stored them in the fridge. I think we made 5 or 6 at a time . Then took them out as needed.

Mylittlesandwich · 24/10/2022 19:50

We had this kettle which I found the most useful thing ever. Boiled the water then held it at 70 just ready to mix formula with. Put it in ice cold water while I changed his nappy and it was good to go when I was done
