High blood glucose readings 2 days before ELCS

Hey guys! I have GD and I’ve been managing it well with diet since 28 weeks. I’m now 37+4 and I have my ELCS after 2 days. However, today and in the last couple of days my readings have been higher than ever before. Probably because I’m not able to walk much anymore after meals, and I’m definitely not as active as I used to be. I’m eating the same meals as before and getting high readings. An hour after dinner my blood glucose reading was 9.4, the highest it’s ever been! I was shocked as it’s never been over 8.7 before. I did eat a few chips but I only had 4-5. Should I be super worried about this at this stage? Only 2 days are left until my c-section and I don’t know what to do. I will text my diabetic midwife tomorrow to let her know but there won’t be much they can do at this stage, as they won’t be able to start me on medication or insulin a day before my CS. Help guys?

can you phone your 24hr maternity assessment unit and see what they say? i don’t think they’d start you on insulin etc at this point but they may bring cs forward if it continues

I have gd too, your tolerances can change as the pregnancy progresses in line with your hormones making you more insulin resistant. There are things I ate when I first was diagnosed like apples that I can't get away with now so had to switch to Blueberries and after a few weeks I needed to have insulin at bedtime only, so there's a constant back and forth of trying to find the right balance as your hormone levels change. Stress can have an impact as well I've read. I doubt that 2 days before your csection they'll panic because it's so close especially if you've been diet managed this whole time and baby is measuring within a normal range but I'd ring your diabetic midwife to chat it through. I'd also reassess what you're eating to see if you can pair more protein with a smaller amount of your wholemeal carbs and making sure you're having a small amount of carbs with each meal so you're not having a spike when you eat them after cutting back too far. I also find that just moving around, doing some housework etc is enough for me to keep things in check as I have pgp so can't do as much walking as I'd like. It doesn't need to be the obvious exercise, could just be pottering around dusting/tidying or whatever you feel is manageable and gentle. Good luck for your section and meeting your little one!!

I have GD too for the second time and on 2x metformin. I know GD can change through out pregnancy as your body can be less resilient.

What are your readings meant to be?

For me they have to be below 5.3 pre meal and below 6.4 after meals.

I’ll definitely give my diabetic midwife a call in the morning and see what she says. It’s so annoying and I was so shocked when my reading was 9.4 an hour after dinner. Honestly, I’m unable to do any housework now too because I get bad back pain and stomach cramps too when I even walk a little bit. When I walk a little too much my legs start to cramp. Definitely going to try to reduce my carbs and increase my protein intake even more these next two days because I really don’t want to be stressing about this at this stage.

@PinkButtercups my fasting level is meant to be under 5.3, and 1 hour after meals should be under 7.8.
