Im 27 wks baby dr sent me for us scan as she thought i seemed small turns out babys abdo measurement?
measuremant is only just above 3rd centile, her estimated weight is only 891g (10.6 centile), but every other measuremunt is falling well within average range, fluid seems ok and doppler seem ok just worried as i dont know what could have caused this or if there is anything i can do to improve her weight etc... I did ask the registrar but she just said rest and eat!!! anyone with any advise would be well appreciated.

no it was 27 weeks i had the scan as dr concearned i was small, she hasnt dropped, she is laying transverse. i have just had a midwife appointment and babys heartbeat was at 120 bpm and although the midwife said that was fine and baby is probably just resting this is now worrying me too as her heartbeat is usually faster, maybe i am just a worry wart but the concearn over her abdo size and also now the slower then before heartbeat is stressing me....!!

Remember that centiles are worked out based on a population of babies, so the 50th centile is an average. This means that about half will be above this line and about half below - doesn't mean that they're unhealthy, just not 'average'! The key things are that your baby is growing and that blood flow through the placenta, as measured by the doppler, is good.

Please don't worry about the baby's heart rate - 120bpm is totally and utterly normal. Babies' heart rates don't stay exactly the same (in fact it would be a worry if it did!) Are you booked in for any more scans? Please try not to worry - easier said than done, I know.

Oedema is swelling. What's your blood pressure like?

You could always phone and ask her what she meant and also see if she can reassure you about the scan.

chops - an easy way to test for swelling (which you may not be able to see if you can't actually see your ankles anymore, is to pinch the skin on your hand, if it goes right back you are normally okay, if the mark remains and it takes a few seconds for blood to flow back where you have pinched, you are swollen. You can also do this with your fingertips.

Are you particularly small yourself? The docs are probably worried about inter uterine growth restriction. Next time you see them, ask specifically what they are worried will happen.

i did ask but the registrar said that she doesnt want to go into something that will worry me before they know for definate what is happening, (they want to wait and see if baby has grown next scan). That is ok to say that but as mums do we still worry...! My midwife said pretty much the same today, it doesnt seem to matter how much asking you do they only tell you as much as they want (and very generic answers at that!!!). I dont think im swollen so who knows, just stressed!

I think it's unreasonable of them to keep you in the dark about your baby. Have you told the midwife how worried you feel, I would think not knowing what's going on is more worrying than not being given all the information. I do hope they are more forthcoming next visit.

WTF oh yeah, of course you won't worry if they tell you nothing!

I think it'd be an idea to go back to the midwife - preferably with someone a bit bolshy with you and ask questions till you get an idea what you are facing. If you have intra uterine growth restriction you are going to need to know anything, because you will need to know what the proposed care plan is? Early delivery, or watchful monitoring? You have choices here. You need the information to understand and make those choices.

It's bloody patronising if nothing else to be patted on the head and say 'we'll see dear, don't worry your pretty little head etc.'

I'm so sorry you are going through this.

I don't know if it is helpful or not, but my scans have showed average size for everything except abdo too. But with the reverse, my baby's belly is in the 98th centile, far far bigger than it should be for the rest of the body. I was told that it showed one of a couple of possibilities, either I had gestational diabeties, and the baby was getting too much suger (but I don't have gd so that is not the case), or that baby was getting extra-ordinarily well nourished (think they said it like this to be nice to me!), the umbilical cord is very thick and basically my little one is getting over fed and fat, but all other measures are remaining average.

So to take the reverse into account, if your baby is average size, then it is obviously growing well and they are happy, but they would want to check that this was continuing, and that it was not placenta failing or anything like that. So as a precaution they will be looking at growth for your little one, just to check that all is well and like my one, it is just one of those things and does not affect their health generally, just makes them extra special!

its so hard to be positive in situations like this as not enough information worries you and too much information (knowledge),can be just as bad so its kinda a no win thing hey!! Just hope i guess
