Head size at 28 week scan. Very worried

Hi, my babies head was measuring in the 38 percentile at 20 weeks.
I'm 28 weeks now and it's on the 10th.
I'm very worried. I've phoned through my measurements to the midwife and she said not to worry, but surely this can't be good?

Any midwives about to explain this?
Anyone had similar?

My baby had a head measuring at one end of the scale, and an abdomen at the other, in fact over. There were concerns about a genetic condition with organ enlargement so I had a very lengthy and detailed scan. It was scary at the time but all was fine. She looked perfectly normal when she was born ! Her hat size is small, at 17 she is a delicate person , 22” waist . She certainly isn’t big around the middle !
So try not to worry, they would be referring you if they were concerned.

When my HV measured DS' head at his 6wk check she reckoned it was 9th centile on a 50th centile body.

(It sure didn't feel 9th centile when I was pushing it out).

My son has a perfectly normal head and is fine, no developmental concerns.

Really, I wouldn't worry too much 🙂your baby will probably come out healthy and looking completely normal.

(As a side note, there was a thread on here a while ago where a midwife explained how many people don't have perfectly proportionate bodies, loads of adults have disproportionately long torsos or short arms or big heads, but no one ever thinks about it except to maybe to get frustrated while clothes shopping).

Thanks, it's good to know I'm not the only one who has been through this stress and worry.

I'm mainly concerned because it's changed from fairly average to quite small. I'm not petite at all either so can't really say that is likely :(

I would question/ ask why it seems to have dropped again. It could have been just the way it was measured, but I would want to check.

NervousMama2b · 21/10/2022 20:13

Yes I will do but will have to wait till Monday as my midwife doesn't work evenings or weekends.
Fun weekend of worry up ahead then.

The dropping happened with my dd too. But it is completely understandable that you want to talk through this with your midwife. I hope you get reassurance soon OP.

Those measurements can be so off. My sons were very low down on the chart, can’t remember the numbers exactly but they were monitoring his growth closely because of this. At term they induced me as they were worried, he had stopped growing at 38 weeks apparently, and was measuring 6lb, small head and no growth at all in two weeks (my previous two babies were large so 6lb is a low centile for me)

he popped out 9lb 13oz, screaming his head off and he had a normal head! Nothing wrong with him.

I wouldn’t worry as I suspect it’s quite common to get it wrong.

Hi, just thought I'd update in case anyone searches this later if they're worried. Baby born with a normal sized head and it's now on the larger percentiles.
They were monitoring me for her being so small. She was born on the 75th and is now between the 85th and 95th so those scans were way out and worry was unnecessary. Thanks for the reassurance. Those last week's of pregnancy and first days after birth were horrible because I was overthinking measurements. I really think that all the scanning is more hindrance than help.

They won’t stress unless measurements drop over two centile lines, due to variation when measuring. I had similar issues, questioned and said it only triggers when 2 lines are crossed
