Can I continue doing Pilates?

I’m 4w6 today, the Pilates classes I’ve started are quite challenging classes, quite a bit of core work is involved which makes me nervous. Is there anything I should be avoiding?

The prenatal classes they offer are just really easy, I think they’re catered more towards 3rd trimester.

Speak to the coach, my coaches always advise alternative moves for anyone who is pregnant if there's something that might be too strenuous. They'll know best!

Yes! I actually took it up in pregnancy to help with ligament aches.

Yes you can but tell your instructor that you are pregnant. They will give you adaptations for certain exercises or alternative exercises that work the same muscle groups, if there’s anything contraindicated in pregnancy. Or if the class is too advanced, they’ll tell you and hopefully suggest another class that is more intermediate but still pregnancy safe. You need to be careful of your ligaments in early pregnancy, they are softening and stretching and you are more prone to injury (thanks to the hormone, relaxin), that’s more of a risk than anything.

Great thanks! Were the alterations mainly for the core stuff? The classes I’m doing at the moment are online so might try and find one to actually go to in person.

Yeah mostly for twists and crunches or anything that restricts/puts pressure on the core area. Most of the adaptations from my coach are small, like foggy legs instead of knees up. Or supporting yourself with your hands and keeping your feet on the floor instead of lifting hands and feet together. It definitely won't feel as much of a work out, but still good for you! I'd definitely recommend a class in person if possible, my coach spends a bit of time with everyone individually and has hawk eyes, if you're not in the correct position she will be over to help, even a tiny pelvis tilt of like 5mm makes all the difference! Only a good coach in person will be able to spot that, would be more difficult through a big screen I'd imagine!
Les Mills on demand is really good for something with pregnancy options - im not sure if they have pilates on there but they have body balance which is a nice little mix of pilates, yoga and tai chi.
