Glucose test for GD

Hi all, I had my blood glucose test for gestational diabetes this morning. When the man showed me the drink I was surprised how much there was but eventually finished it after some small pauses. I didn't feel great during the two hour wait I was a bit burpy but thought it would pass. Then just 15 minutes before my two hour wait was up I had to run to the toilet and vomit! I tried to walk a bit to keep it down but it was impossible and now they said that the glucose test is void and I'll have to book another one. Any tips for me to avoid this happening again?! I have suffered with slow digestion for a lot of the pregnancy and it is a common symptom but I never realised it would be so difficult to drink all the glucose drink and keep it down!

I’m sure they can determine it through just doing a blood test instead? Or pricking your finger and testing for a period of time, may be worth enquiring about alternative methods

so sorry you had to go through that and then it be voided it’s awful enough as is

I had this with my first, I think I lasted just over an hour. Part of the problem for me was that the waiting room was hot and uncomfortable, and also I’d been reading and I think the combination of it all gave me what was almost like travel sickness. I can’t remember but are you allowed to drink water once you’ve had the glucose drink? If so I think that’s probably the best bet.

If you can’t tolerate it your options are to decline it, or ask if you can do blood sugar testing instead as this doesn’t require the fasting/drink.

I had one last week but only had to drink a small plastic cup sized amount. Wonder if there's different ways of diluting it?

I nearly got sick during mine but just about managed not to!

I had to do a week of glucose fingerprick testing (6 times a day) instead, as I can't drink much in one go. For four pregnancies - twice for one of them. And I never had GD Smile

During lockdown they didn’t do the glucose version, it was just a blood test - ask for that instead!

I had to drink an orange solution in a capri sun type pouch. Must have been around 300ml in it and I struggled to finish it within 10 mins. I also felt sick but sat still for the two hours and gradually felt better so maybe you could try sitting still or sipping water once you finish it?

My first child was born in Switzerland and here they do this as a standard test for everyone. I was given a little bottle of lemon juice along with the glucose drink, and told to try adding a few drops if it made it easier. It absolutely helped…and I also remember it being quite a big cup! Pregnant again and will have another in a few weeks…thinking I will take my own lemon juice in case this was just one nurses great idea and not a standard thing! Maybe worth a try if you have to do the test again?
