Hi, I am 13 weeks pregnant and I have really bad constipation. I wondered if you could please suggest any constipation remedies that worked for you. I have acid reflux so avoiding anything acidic such as fruits/juices.

I am happy to try anything over the counter or on prescription but preferably something i can use long term because constipation seems to be a long term symptom for me.

TIA

Thanks for all your advice, ladies!! I have a very full shopping list now for the pharmacy and the supermarket. I will report back how it goes!

Because it can set like concrete and get hard, dry, very large and painful to pass. Especially if everything is already extra slow due to hormones. This is where you can end up needing an enema. Tiny amounts mixed with porridge oats might be fine, but not large quantities of the really bulky stuff.

Oh gosh, thank you for clarifying!! OK, will take all bran off the shopping list or have very little with porridge.

I am the queen of constipation and what works for me depends on where the constipation is.

Stomach pain, full feeling, no appetite, bloated but no urge to go - Laxido or Movicol (same thing) - when I have been really bad six sachets in a day, the blockage usually clears within a day or two.

No pain, constant urge to go but too hard and painful to pass. Glycerin suppositories. Poo one in, ten minutes later instant relief.

Both can be bought over the counter. I always keep both in the cupboard.

Don’t take pregnancy multi vits. Stopping overdosing on iron made my awful pregnancy constipation disappear.

Take a break off the pregnancy vitamins for a few days, dose of fibrogel every day drink loads of water and good luck x

It really sucks but for me by 16 weeks the constipation stopped but it was really horrible so you have my symptathies

@Quinny2288 Over the counter. They definitely keep you regular if you take them regularly.

I use these. I'm not in the UK though and they're much cheaper here. You can absolutely find something similar in Boots/Superdrug if you ask the pharmacist.

I took lactulose 1-2 times a week. Really feel for you. It was my only pregnancy symptom last time but it's still not nice. Just a warning that it continued for a while after birth for me too and lactulose didn't cut it then, so don't be scared to speak to the doctor if you need something more. I waited 4 weeks and it was hideous

Ladies, I just wanted to update you all. I sent my husband out at lunch time to pick me up some movicol, glycerine suppositors and luctolose, as well as lentil and veg soup, and I can honestly say I feel like a new woman as I managed to go!! I took just one movicol sachet (i was ready to take three), and then to help with the pain i used a glycerine suppository. Oh my gosh, thank you all SO MUCH!!

I already had prunes and prune juice since last night, so i've just been eating the lentil and veg soup and prunes, prune juice and forcing myself to drink water. I also have bought some all bran, just to prinkle on my porridge in the mornings starting from tomorrow. I was eating really unhealthy before this (burgers, pasta) so I'm hoping that with the change in my diet, I will hopefully give myself the best chance to avoid being here again. I also went for a walk for an hour!! I'm going to keep up the walking.

THANK YOU SO MUCH once again for sharing all your advice, tips, and what to buy xxxx
