Hi there.

I had this in my last pregnancy. I felt little sharp nails dig in just above the pubic bone one evening and a few mins later there was a pop and my waters broke. Labour started the next day.

I'm pregnant again - how likely is this to reoccur in anyones experience?

Thanks:-)

I'm not sure but following as my waters broke early on in labour too, although I was 41+3. Would rather that not happen this time as it puts a horrible timer on things!

With my first it happened at 35 weeks then the exact same thing with my 2nd at 37+6. I had no warning or feeling, just randomly started leaking both times. Currently pregnant with #3 and wondering if it will be the same this time. The first time I was induced as nothing happened on its own and it was before 37 weeks. 2nd time around was a lot more laid back as it was after 37 weeks. I chose to be induced but the labour ward was full.so they sent me home and told me to come in later that evening. By the time I went back in I was having some mild contractions (16 hours later) and didn't end up needing the induction.

Thanks for your replies.
@Erber can I ask was your baby OP position? Just doing some research and it appears this can increase the change of it. My pelvis isn't that wide and that can lead to OP. Only 14 weeks but now feeling abit pessimistic about the chances of a non interventional birth

(My first baby was OP)

I've heard position makes a lot of difference as well, can cause waters breaking and longer labour.

Have you heard of the spinning babies website? You could follow their tips for optimal foetal positioning

Skylark1990 · 16/10/2022 21:08

Mine wasn't OP but she was in an awkward position

Erber · 16/10/2022 21:24

@Sawa75 I'm not exactly sure other positions at that time. The last time it was checked my 1st was still.transverse. that would've been at my last midwife appointment the week before.

The 2nd time I needed an assisted delivery as I had been pushing too long and I had a scan to make sure she was in the correct position (which she was) before they attempted ventouse, but that was at the pushing stage. I can't remember it ever being mentioned when in the hospital. I never had any pressure or issues walking that others describe so I don't think either were engaged when it happened.

OP my waters went at 37+6 in my first pregnancy, DD was back to back.
Second pregnancy DS was facing the right way and my waters went as I was pushing. If you're anything like me and second baby is facing the right way then labour will be a doddle compared to first time round!

Tree543 · 16/10/2022 21:55

I had dc1 at 36+1 waters broke and started labour 4 hours later. Was back to back.

Dc2 35+5 waters broke (heard a pop) Labour started 3 hours later. Right way round.

Dc3 39+5 contractions started then waters broke a few hours later.

So pattern for my first 2 then different for the third.

Trinxsy · 16/10/2022 21:58

Waters at 30 weeks with 1st and 24 weeks with DTwins so maybe not going to go for a fourth!

Trinxsy · 16/10/2022 21:59

Oops sorry I can't read and missed that you said term. Ignore me BlushBlush

greenerfingers · 16/10/2022 23:00

My labour started with my waters breaking and steady contractions but I wouldn't dilate past 5cm/6cm. Turns out baby was back to back. Took me 16 hours turning him. Ended up being born 22 hours after my waters broke and I was just about to be transferred in (the timer is a real nuisance). I had a home birth and although it was so tiring having an OP baby, the recovery after was a breeze compared to having had a c section (which is what I probably would have had in hospital).

Teenylittlefella · 17/10/2022 07:11

Mine went before labour in 3 of my 4.

Sawa75 · 17/10/2022 08:20

Thanks so much for the responses ladies, good to know there is a chance of a different outcome. I'll defo use the spinning babies techniques etc - from 28 weeks or so??

This happened with my first at 36 weeks, with my second I was induced at 39 weeks and waters didn't break til just before he was out.
