Ketones in urine….

Long story short - never been tested for gestational diabetes as don’t fall under risk criteria. Urine has always been super clear of everything.
Get sent for presentation scan at 37wks - sonographer mentions baby is looking big so I get referred to consultant who books an induction for 38+3, mentions diabetes and sends me away works glucose monitor and a low carb diet.
now 38 weeks exactly, been following my low carb diet, readings been fine, and now have ketones in my pee for the first time ever. Midwife thinks it’s because of the low carb diet. I’m so conflicted about the info I’ve been given.
should I be worried about the ketones? Due for my induction on Monday but tbh at this stage I’m going to ask for a c section as baby is no where near engaged and I’m drained about big baby/diabetes/ketones etc and just want them here safely.

They haven't tested you for GD but instead are just presuming you have it?

ecossegirl91 · 14/10/2022 17:23

Yes, exactly. Too late to test apparently but with the bigger baby they are presuming I have it. Doesn’t make sense to me either but now I’m scared of carbs incase blood sugar goes mental and it’s been uncontrolled this whole pregnancy.
fyi urine was last tested on 03.10 and was clear. Now has ketones after this diabetes chat.

Had you eaten before urine was tested ? I ask because this happened to me. I did have gestational diabetes but my urine was tested and I was hungry! So it showed +++ ketones. They gave me a sandwhich tested again an hour later and was back to +

So I’d had breakfast - Greek yoghurt with fruit and lots of nuts and seeds then wasn’t overly hungry at lunch time so had a protein peanut bar. I just feel Stuck between a rock and hard place!

Obviously I might be wrong but could be the fact you needed a meal !

ecossegirl91 · 14/10/2022 17:56

Yes totally could have been! I just find it odd to be treated as a diabetic and then immediately when I start low carb ketones are present! Just can’t wait to get the baby out safely!

Could have also been if you hadn't drunk enough. Low carb diets will generally give you ketones in your urine, I was always told I had plenty towards the end of my pregnancy. I was very strict with my carb intake as I am such a pessimist I was paranoid about harming my baby from the moment of diagnosis. Apart from one hospital visit where a midwife terrified me and said I might have to be put on a sliding scale and ketones are dangerous for diabetics, no one else really cared. Apparently they're only dangerous if you're on insulin (although some American research suggests that having low carb intake and ketones can affect babies intelligence 🤷 I'd say at this stage of your pregnancy it's not going to make a huge difference)

That's disgusting. It's too late for the normal GD test but I've been sent for fasting bloods at 35 weeks in both of my pregnancies due to glucose in my urine. I just don't understand why they won't send you for that!

ecossegirl91 · 14/10/2022 20:43

I know and I’ve never even had glucose in my urine before, it’s always been fine! Now ten days of low carb and there’s ketones but they’ve scared me off carbs incase I’m hurting the baby! 😔 sooner baby is here the better. Midwife has told me to go ahead to my induction appt but to speak properly to a consultant - midwife supports me in a c section so fingers crossed.
