TW - Missed miscarriage SMM/MVA

Found out at dating scan yesterday that baby stopped growing at 8 weeks, no heartbeat. Should have been nearly 13 weeks. Absolutely gutted as also had a miscarriage in July as well and have had loads of symptoms, no signs of anything being wrong at all.

Anyone have any experiences to share about SMM/MVA?

Don’t want to drag things out and would prefer to deal with things as quickly as possible. But the thought of a general anaesthetic is freaking me out. Not sure what the MVA would be like with just local.

So sorry for your loss

I can only comment on having a D&C under general for my MMC - found out at 12 weeks scan did not make it to 7 weeks

I waited for a couple of weeks to see if it would happen naturally and then had the surgery. For me, it was fine - to be asleep when the medical stuff happened was less traumatic I think, even though still awful

Hope it goes ok and wishing you luck in the future (my ds was conceived 6 months after my D&C) Flowers

So sorry you are going through this, I have had a natural mc, d&c under general and last week had an MVA. I was quite worried and asked for sedatives, they offered gas and air instead which really helped but honestly the procedure although unpleasant is very short and overall much less traumatic for me than passing it naturally. Hope that helps x

Thanks for sharing, so sorry for both your losses. It’s such a rubbish club to be in isn’t it.

I’ve opted for the MVA under local but have to wait another week for the next available appt. I’ve had 2 natural miscarriages at home before, one of which was quite traumatic. So hoping the MVA feels more controlled.

Thanks so much for sharing @Candyflosscrochet it was really helpful to read. Feels like I have made the right choice, just struggling with having to wait until next Wednesday which can’t get here soon enough.

The wait is horrible
Will be thinking of you @DottyLittleRainbow

MVA is ok I found, not too painful, over quickly. , better than having a general. sorry you’re going through this.

So sorry your going through this it really is horrible. I had a MMC quite a few years ago now, found out at my 12 week scan no heartbeat, I was terrified of having a D&C and waited for something the happen naturally but it didn't. So went in for the op and honestly it was fine over quickly and not much pain afterwards. Hope this helps in some way xx

Thanks for everyone who has taken the time to post. Sorry for everyone’s losses.

Can I ask how heavy did people find the bleeding after the MVA? Not sure how it compares to a natural miscarriage, whether it would be less.

I found the bleeding quite light compared to my normal period. You can't use tampons/cup but I never flooded a towel. I've not had a natural miscarriage so can't compare but from what I've read and the sort of periods I usually have, it is much lighter.
And my second period after was different too, a bit stop start but again not heavy, but back into a normal cycle so was able to fall pregnant after that (successfully...he's now 16months). Xx

Hi there,

I just had my MVA this morning. Overall it was painful but not enough so for me to make them stop, and it was over in a matter of minutes. So far there is a fair amount of bleeding but I'd put it on par with my normal flow. Cramping has been manageable with ibuprofen. Obviously it's early days for me to speak long term on recovery and as it was my first pregnancy I can't speak to how it compares to a natural miscarriage.

Overall I'm happy with the decision and it helped me gain closure and begin my healing journey. Sending you well wishes and so sorry for your loss x
