30 weeks out of breath and heart racing

Hi all
I'm 30 weeks pregnant and can't seem to do anything without being out of breath and heart racing. Doing stairs is the worst. Mornings seem worse too. It's stopping me from doing daily tasks and making me so down. Midwife doesn't seem bothered. Should I speak to a doctor?

Have you had your iron tested?

BarbaraWoodlouse · 12/10/2022 09:40

When I had this it was anaemia. I would hope a GP would test for this as well as possibly rechecking for diabetes etc.

DecayedStrumpet · 12/10/2022 09:40

I actually got obstetric cholestasis around that stage, and the only symptom was that I was suddenly really fatigued and couldn't get up the stairs, none of the classic itching.

Luckily my lovely GP believed I was feeling weird and sent me for a blood test, definitely worth trying to get one and see if anything is out of whack.

Namenic · 12/10/2022 09:57

Yes - go to see the gp. There are lots of things it could be - anaemia, blood clot, effect of baby occupying more space. But you need to be assessed (heart tracing, measure oxygen level) to rule out the dangerous things.

Definitely speak to GP. I had the same and was severely anaemic. Easily fixed but important to get checked

Thank you I will ring the gp first thing

I had this as well as palpitations at 30weeks. I phoned the Maternity Unit as it was out of hours for my midwife and they admitted me to run tests for a few scary things.

i ended up having full ECG, blood thinning injections, xray and CT scan to rule out blood clots as well as 24 hours of monitoring blood pressure and pulse. My pulse was 146 at one point!

all tests came back neg and consultant explained to me that as you approach the end of pregnancy the blood volume in your body is a lot higher so your heart has to work harder so sometimes these things just happen.

i would definitely phone docs or midwife to get checked out and rule out the scary stuff, it helped me loads to know there wasn’t anything causing it! Good luck x

ScarlettnotOHara · 13/10/2022 05:25

I had this it was a blood clot, it’s probably not but get it checked to be safe.

ohnoohnoo · 13/10/2022 05:36

Have you had a recent scan? I found out at 30 weeks that I had too much amniotic fluid (plus quite a big baby). By 32 weeks I was so out of breath I couldn't walk around the house and was rushed in to hospital for a CT scan as they thought I had a blood clot on my lungs. Turned out it was just all the pressure from my huge bump (because of the extra fluid) pushing up and basically squashing my chest. Everything was fine but I ended up being induced early at 37 weeks as it got too uncomfortable and my breathing was getting worse. DS was absolutely fine but was born at 8lbs at 37 weeks so probably would have been a whopper! Grin.
Just mentioning as it could be worth you having a scan to check your amniotic fluid levels.

Hiya, I had my 20 week scan nothing was said. We're actually having a private scan today. I ended up in a&e in the end after seeing the doctor. They did some checks and said all seemed ok. He felt baby and said he was quite low still so probably wasn't him pushing up into my lungs sort of thing? I did have a large baby for my first (10lb1oz at 41 weeks) they are supposed to be keeping an eye on me this time round but haven't really so far. I guess I'll find out today at the scan if any problems with the fluid etc and it said they estimate Size

Hi love
That must have been scary at the time! I ended up in a&e in the end they did a few checks all seemed okay. Did an eeg on heart that was fine. Said my hemoglobin was low and to take iron.

I went to a&e in the end and they did mention that was their worry but they did some checks and sent me home so hopefully all ok. Just said hemoglobin was a bit low

It was scary at the time but it felt good to be getting a high level of care, it reassured me that everything would be sorted!

very relieving to find out nothing scary though. So glad to hear you were checked and nothing found! Not long until we meet our little ones and it’s all worth it (or so I’m told 😋) x

Thanks for thinking of me! The scan went well. He is measuring on the big side. Big head and belly average size legs lol. Fluid etc was fine. Think I'm going to be referred for a 36 week scan and then they will decide what to do next
