Covid with symptoms while pregnant

Hiya, I'm at almost 23w and just tested positive for covid today (on the day I was due to have my booster shot, ffs). I have proper symptoms, with the coughing and sore throat and aching muscles. It's just like flu, but I'm scared for my baby. I've messaged my midwife but haven't heard back. I've heard having covid could cause still birth or complications, but I can't tell if this is true or just speculation, as there don't seem to be many scientific studies on it that have conclusive results. I guess I was wondering - is there anyone here who had covid while pregnant who can offer some reassurance or advice? I'm starting to spiral with my anxiety and I'm kind of near tears with it.

I had it at 11 weeks which was worrying knowing how much development is happening then but all was fine. I'd say my symptoms felt worse because of the pregnancy and it seemed to last longer than anyone I knew who had it and not pregnant. I think the thing that can cause an issue is a high temp and keep an eye on breathing. Other than that you should be fine - rest lots, paracetemol etc and try not to worry as babies in the womb are so well protected and used to fighting our coughs and colds!

Xxx

Had it at 22/23 weeks and again at 39 weeks (and during labour) and all fine

I am currently 21w and tested positive on Tuesday. Just starting to feel better now. If anything baby has been more active in the last few days. So don't worry!

Hi I had covid at 13 weeks - a bit worrying given it’s first trimester/2nd trimester.

took paracetamol regularly to control fever for the first two days but felt ok on third day - a bit fatigued.

baby didn’t seem impacted from that. I didn’t need to use blood thinners

Namechanger355 · 10/10/2022 21:41

Your body is going to work extra time to get better for baby - baby is protected but you might be fatigued as you are doing all the work

so don’t worry too much but just monitor symptoms and rest

Yes I had it at 8 months pregnant. Felt crap and tired but baby was absolutely fine. I know it's hard but try not to worry xxx

I had it in July when I was 24/25 weeks pregnant. I had the first two vaccines but hadn't had the booster. I didn't get a cough, but had flu-y symptoms with a headache for two days and then felt a lot better (which was just as well as my DH and toddler then came down with it!). I didn't actually let my midwife know I had it because no-one had mentioned that I should before and I didn't bother to check the NHS website too see that I should have done until a while after I was already feeling better.

I'd been looking at the stats around pregnant women and COVID and there doesn't seem to be anything that distinguishes between those who are totally unvaccinated (and also had never had it) and those who have had two doses of the vaccine. A lot of the worry was in 2021 when I vaccinated pregnant women were catching the delta variant which did appear to be nastier for them and they hadn't had the vaccine at that point.

I tested positive at 21 weeks pregnant and I was terrified as this was my second baby and I lost my first last year at 33 weeks.
As this was my rainbow pregnancy I had been having extra scans with Tommy's. If you haven't already then Google Tommy's and Covid. They are a reputable charity that are led by NHS specialists in fetal medicine. They are also constantly doing research into stillbirth and have done a LOT of research into the effects of Covid and pregnancy.
When I tested positive I contacted my Tommy's midwife immediately and she told me the following things:

  1. The risk is much higher in the third trimester, but the risk is higher for the mum rather than the baby due to the breathing difficulties it can cause.
  2. All of the mums that have had Covid and complications had never had a Covid jab.
  3. They have done a lot of research into Covid causing issues to the baby (something I was unbelievably worried about) and they found absolutely no connection between Covid and the baby being born with any issues.

I was advised to by an oximeter (they're about £20 from Argos) and keep an eye on my oxygen level. It should always be 95 or above so I was told if it dropped them get in touch with hospital immediately, but it never went below 96 for myself.

My little girl is now 9 weeks old and is absolutely perfect! The Tommy's midwife also told me that I may have passed on some antibodies too her! Stay hydrated and rest, but also keep moving when you can to keep the blood and oxygen flowing.

Hope you feel better soon 🥰

I tested positive at 39+2 (but was ill before, i wasn't ill by the time i was tested) the day before I had my baby. Currently looking at my healthy DS in his crib, he wasn't affected by it, I suffered more than he did

Mufflette · 10/10/2022 22:01

I had it at 19 weeks, felt awful and also was worried. Baby is 9 weeks old, totally fine and no complications.

bogoblin · 10/10/2022 22:06

Yes, I had it at 26/27 weeks this year and was in bed a whole week! Felt terrible, it was the most congested I've ever been in my entire life. I've had both jabs and my booster.

My baby is now 3 weeks old and he's fine. I didn't tell my midwife until after I'd had it and she wasn't concerned.

Keep an eye on your baby's movements and try to keep hydrated and eating and get plenty of rest as your body will be working extra hard.

I just had it at 24/25 weeks and was reassured by the midwife and GP that it won't hurt the baby! Like everyone else said just rest loads, drink loads of fluids and take paracetamol if you need to. Phone your GP too for reassurance :)

In a similar boat OP. Currently 23 weeks and tested positive on Wednesday. Felt horrendous on Wednesday night but weirdly enough, by Thursday night I felt somewhat better. Still not 100% now and still testing positive, but just making sure I take paracetamol when needed and drinking plenty of fluid.

Feel better soon!
