Hello, friends!

I am a 35 y.o. obese woman from Italy. I was always told by the doctors that I have insulin resistance whenever I went to doctors and gave blood.

Now I am 17 weeks pregnant and my fasting blood sugar was 138 (7.7 mmol). And the doctor told me that I have diabetes.

Is it possible to have gestational diabetes that early in pregnancy? Or I have diabetes now for forever?

Btw, my HbA1c is 6.3

It's possible at any time during pregnancy to get it. Speak to your GP/midwife for advice and a proper diagnosis

It is possible to get it early, and it's also possible that you had it already. There's no way of knowing for sure until after you deliver. I was diagnosed with GD with my 1st when I was 31 weeks. I had another pregnancy last year that unfortunately didn't progress past 8 weeks and from monitoring my blood glucose, I was diagnosed pretty much straight away at 5 weeks and on insulin. I didn't go on to have diabetes afterwards though. I'm now pregnant again and like last time, got diagnosed with diabetes at 5 weeks. Not sure about from 17 weeks but I've been told because I've got it so early I'm being treated as type 2. This does not necessarily mean I actually have diabetes but there's no official treatment for GD this early in pregnancy.

Good luck to you. I know what a daunting diagnosis it can be ❤️

Yes.

I had GD in my first pregnancy so they tested me at 16 weeks this time and it came back that I have GD again.

Yes it can. Insulin resistance ( cause for GD) starts early in the second trimester!
