Anterior placenta

We went for our gender scan tonight, I'm 17+2 and I found out I have an anterior placenta. Can anyone share any experience of this? Thanks x

As long as it doesn't cover your cervix at all (placenta previa) it's not an issue.
I'm pregnant with baby 3 and have an anterior placenta this time, it can mean it's harder to find babies heartbeat on the dopla when they're small, and it can shield some of the earlier movement x

I had this with DD1. It was hard for others to feel the baby moving when touching my stomach but I could feel her just fine. She was born premie but that was because of a different issue. Complete normal birth and relatively quick only 40 minutes at stage 2.

I also have an anterior placenta (currently 30 weeks) and although it's never been a problem finding baby's heartbeat for me, I have had hit and miss feelings of movement up until the last couple of weeks. It's nothing to worry about at all but what I have learnt is everyone's experience with it seems to be quite different. My midwife explained that as your bump gets bigger your movements can sometimes feel really low as the placenta moves upwards as your uterus grows and that's exactly how it's been for me. But as everyone will tell you, if in doubt, just go get checked out. Huge congrats to you 😀

Congratulations! I'm 20 weeks on Sunday and have an anterior too. This is my second baby and I've been feeling movements a lot earlier this time around but they can be few and far between. I find a bath is the best way to relax and get bubs rocking and rolling around

I had an anterior placenta with both of my babies. To be honest I didn't notice anything different but didn't have anything to compare it too I suppose. Never an issue finding heartbeat or with movement in fact felt movement really early on with both. However with my second the midwives were adamant he was breech and I got sent for a scan. Turns out he wasn't but not sure the placenta has anything to do with that!

Congrats! I had my baby 8 weeks ago and had an anterior placenta. It didn't change anything for me apart from it took me longer to feel babies movements - I didn't feel anything consistent til I was about 24/25 weeks.

I had an anterior placenta with DC2. Only felt movements at the sides and low down for a long time. He also loved hiding behind the placenta and cord so his heartbeat was difficult to find.... He was also back to back, which is apparently more common with anterior placentas.

Has anyone with anterior placenta struggled with the lack of movement? I’m anxious anyway but I can’t always feel baby move and it just sends me into worry. I’ve had a meltdown this morning cus I’ve not really felt her since yesterday. I’m 25 weeks. Do the movements increase the further we go?

Stephanie226 · 27/01/2023 11:08

I've never had any problems with movement however my friend was in literally every week getting movements checked as she couldn't feel much at all. Just phone if your concerned x

Yes I had issues with not feeling movement and with an anterior placenta. Think I was checked over about 6 times in total - if you are worried then ring, they are always happy to check baby over. Everything was always fine and baby was just in a funny position - even as I got bigger I had times where she was quieter than normal. I think I was checked about 3 times in the last 3 weeks of pregnancy x

I had an anterior placenta for my firstborn. The only thing that caused an issue for me is that it increases the chance of a back to back birth. My baby was back to back and while many women have no issue with back to back births, it did drag mine out and it was an assisted birth in the end.

ParentsTrapped · 27/01/2023 12:34

I had an anterior placenta in my second pregnancy. Had no impact at all - felt movements really early (earlier than with DC1) and baby was not back to back. By the end of my pregnancy it was actually more on the top of my womb than the front (“fundal” placenta apparently).

WineCap · 27/01/2023 12:38

I didn't mean for my experience to come across as negative or to be scare-mongering fyi. It's just statistically true that a back to back birth is more likely but obviously not guaranteed.

My baby and I were both fine!

I had an anterior place at with my daughter. Finding heartbeat was no issue but did take longer to feel kicks. I could feel gentle movement but not kicks etc as they went into the placenta until baby was bigger

She was also back to back and I ended up with an emergency section but the section wasn’t because of back to back or the anterior placenta

I remember this thread. :3

As a follow up, I never had any worries about movements. I felt them earlier than DC1 as well. I only ever felt them at the low down and to the sides of my uterus though. I think DC2 was on a mission to pummel every bit of me where I could feel it.
