Breech baby, gestational diabetes and c-section

Hey guys, I hope you’re well. I’m currently 35+2, and I have an appointment with my consultant at exactly 36 weeks (next Wednesday) and that’s when I’ll be given a date for my c-section/induction. Pretty sure it’ll be a c-section though, as baby has been stubbornly breech since 27 weeks (I’ve been having regular growth scans). Anyway, I was wondering when I’m likely to give birth, as honestly I’m scared of going to 40 weeks, especially after recurrent miscarriages. On the whole, my GD has been well managed according to the diabetic midwife and dietitian although there have ofc been high readings once every few days. I haven’t been given medication or anything though because my fasting levels have been fine. However in the last few days, I do seem to be getting high readings more often (almost once a day). I have a growth scan before the consultant appointment next week and I’m feeling nervous tbh, I want to have this baby sooner rather than later.

Also, baby’s been measuring over the 95th centile most of this time so he’s a bit big. I feel so uncomfortable all the time because his head is right underneath my ribs and I can’t lay or sit properly.

I had GD and was told they wouldn't want him in past 39 weeks.
He ended up coming at 38+3 though due to pre eclampsia.

I got induced at 38 weeks with GD & when baby was breech they booked a c-section for the same week.

Have you rang the diabetes helpline to say you are getting a high reading every day?

With mine if I had 2 within 7 days then I had to call & they then told me to start / up my metformin dose. I was on 1 metformin morning & night by the end of the pregnancy.
I had a high reading approximately once every 10 days! Except when I had 2 in a row & had to adjust the metformin.

Oh! Was your GD diet controlled?

My diabetic midwife and dietitian honestly don’t seem to be taking my GD seriously at all. I’ve contacted them so many times saying that I get high readings once every 2-3 days, they replied saying that’s absolutely fine and that I’m actually controlling it well as long as it’s less than 30% or so of my readings that are high. I texted my diabetic midwife again today and gave her a missed call. I texted her saying I’m now getting more high readings almost everyday, although they’re not too high (under 8.5) but they still are high and worrying. I can’t stop stressing and the midwife hasn’t replied yet. Last thing she said was that everything will be okay and that I’ll get the date and stuff next week. Idk what to think of this. It’s stressing me out badly and I know it’s not good to say this but honestly, if it was up to me I would have this baby by 37-38 weeks because I’m scared.

What also doesn’t help is that I’ve been having reduced movements which ofc I’ve been going in for. Every time everything’s absolutely fine with baby and as soon as they turn on the monitors he starts kicking like crazy. Since 21-22 weeks, I’ve been in I think 5 times for reduced movements, once was last week. This is so stressful

I had GD and my baby was born via C-section at 39+1, however this was an elective section that was planned before the GD diagnosis.
Talk to your consultant, but I've only heard stories of babies coming early where GD is involved. I lost my son at 33 weeks last year, so I was also anxious in my successful pregnancy and wanted the baby here. My consultant was so lovely and explained that 39 weeks is the perfect time to have a baby. She said while we could bring her at 38 weeks, there's more chance that she may have needed help with breathing and she felt it would have caused me more anxiety to have her whisked away.
In terms of the size, my daughter was consistently above the 97th percentile. We were told she would be over 9lb, but she ended up being 8lb 6oz. She then lost quite a lot of weight and is now putting it back on and is on the 50th percentile ☺️

38 weeks. That was when my sections were scheduled(first babe decided he didn't want to wait that long so had him 9 days earlier).

Shows how different hospitals / trusts operate!
Mine was almost overly cautious about my diabetes. I think my highest reading was 8.3!
They tried to induce me at just over 37 weeks - even though I had under 10% of high readings & a "low dose" of metformin, mainly diet controlled & no other "issues" with fluid / Blood pressure / sugar in urine. I told them no but conceded to it at 38 weeks.
Baby was predicted to be around 8-8.5lb but came out at 7lb 1oz.

On the "due July 2022" threads there were a few people who went in for reduced movement & baby started kicking as soon as monitors were on so you are not alone!

I hope mine is around 38 weeks too and not much later!

They definitely operate differently! I was so surprised when the midwife told me I’m actually managing my sugars well, even with readings like 8.4 and 8.5. Mine will most likely be a c-section as baby’s way too comfortable breech, and I don’t want to get him turned manually. C-sections are usually later than inductions, right?
Thank you so much 😊

Apart from GD, I don’t have any other issues really, like blood pressure or protein in urine etc. Or actually wait, my heart rate has been elevated since like 15 weeks, even though I’m on propranolol. Sometimes it’s 130bpm. 🥺

Planned caesareans are usually booked for 39 weeks, unless there's a reason why they want the baby out earlier. If it's planned, they balance up the baby coming out before 40 weeks with not wanting you to go into labour as that makes it all more stressful!l

MariaDingbat · 08/10/2022 09:16

I've GD and was told they won't let me for past 39 weeks, so probably looking at a section at 37 or 38 weeks depending on growth scans. My first arrived by section at 37+6.

I've been on insulin since 10 weeks (2nd GD baby plus thyroid issues) and the diabetic team will up the insulin dose whenever I get 3 high readings that are unexplained. Last time when I got to 35 weeks and my reading we're going up after meals I had to take insulin before meals too for a few weeks. Check the gestational diabetes Facebook group and see what other trusts do in your situation.
