Hi everyone

Hoping someone can help, has anyone changed hospital during pregnancy ?

I'm 16 weeks and I've been admitted 4 times in 5 weeks and having terrible and mixed information from consultants. I am worried about staying with this hospital to give birth now.

I have booked into see my midwife to see if it's possible and what my choices are if I have any. Was just wondering if anyone has changed through pregnancy.

Thanks

I haven't but a friend of mine changed hospital about 10 days before her ELCS (including changing from Wales to England) and everything was totally fine. She had to have new bloods etc taken as the Welsh NHS doesn't communicate with the English NHS, but you won't have that issue if you're not changing countries!

With my first baby I switched a few weeks before my due date because I wasn't happy with the original hospital's policies. I was all ready to defend my decision but it was really straightforward and no one asked me to justify why. I had to do additional bloods, but I kept all my notes from the first hospital which they were broadly happy with.

You have every right to change hospital they cannot force you to stay with them.

Its best to look up other hospitals in your area with maternity and call them asking to transfer care to them, or you can wait and speak to the midwife and ask her but i would call the hospital you want directly.

I changed at 25 weeks due to moving house, wasn't an issue at all

I changed about 32 weeks because we moved. No problems at all. New hospital did want to rescan me, do glucose tolerance test again and I think re-test bloods as they weren't able to accept previous Trust's results. Not sure why and might be better now everything is more joined up and accessible online

I changed hospitals several months into my pregnancy, but it was 20 years ago, so suspect the process has changed. I seem to remember that it was important to find a reason that fit into their little boxes. ie NOT..."the old hospital was filthy and understaffed and left me in labor for 30 hours in a lobby unchecked until my mother dragged someone in who then decided I needed an immediate emergency CS and then still took 10 more hours to perform the CS". INSTEAD I think I said something along the lines of wanting a natural birth (they had a natural birth floor) and walked into the hospital and introduced myself to the head midwife who took care of all the paperwork. I was also moving houses closer to the new hospital which may have made the transfer easier.

Yes I did.
It was fine.

I almost changed at 37 weeks in my last pregnancy and I didn't. I should have listened to my gut because it was a shit show in labour. Trust your gut.

BeautifulBirds · 07/10/2022 19:31

I changed half way through my first pregnancy.

So glad I did, trusted my gut.

I had to go through the booking process again and have fresh bloods etc, but it was fine.

I changed during labour and it was fine. My notes beat me there.

Yep. But I’m in Scotland. You tell your midwife and they deal with transferring your care. Old hospital stops contacting you and new hospital starts. We use the BadgerNotes app here so it’s quite easy

Thankyou so much everyone. I had my midwife appointment today and she was very supportive after the last 2 weeks process in the hospital she brought it up first and went through everything.

I really do appreciate all your messages.

Hi all, I'm soon moving house (not too far from where we are now) but considering changing hospitals to one that will be a bit closer. I'm only 10w, will I have to repeat the booking appointment details? Midwife I saw did mention bloods will be redone... TIA
