Is protein in urine anything to worry about?

I had my midwife appointment, my blood pressure and blood test results came back normal but the midwife said I had protein in my urine sample but I've been struggling with bad morning sickness, so she said it may be that I'm dehydrated and recommended I drink more. I've started to worry about it, so I was just wondering if anyone had a similar experience or any advice? Thank you

I had that in pregnancy along with high blood pressure and it turned out to be a kidney condition (kidney leaking some protein) that could have worsened in my older age. It's good they found it as it means it's stabilised and under control with medication. I get no other symptoms and it's fine, just a annual check up. I'd get it checked in case, without worrying as it's perfectly treatable.

Protein in your wee can be nothing, or can indicate urine infection or preeclampsia.

Urine infections can increase the risk of miscarriage or early labour, so it’s very important it’s followed up. The midwife should send the urine sample to the labs. If not book an appointment with your doctors surgery tomorrow.

As you have a normal blood pressure, preeclampsia is unlikely.

I had protein in my urine a few times, but this was coupled with high blood pressure. It wasn’t until I was being induced that a doctor told me I was ‘a week away from developing preeclampsia’ so I would think it’s nothing to worry about with normal blood pressure. I’m sure they’ll send the sample off just to double check!

Best wishes and good luck! 😊

Yes it absolutely can be, you need to be checked regularly for protein in case it develops into pre-eclampsia. Hopefully it won't be that but you shouldn't be flippant.

High blood pressure is the main symptom but protein also an important indicator. Worth reading this so you know what to look out for: www.nhs.uk/conditions/pre-eclampsia/symptoms/
