Do midwives know gender?

So i am 36+3 and don't know the babies gender. The baby is breech and when talking to my midwife at my appt (not my usual midwife) she said 'she' a few times - 'she is unlikely to turn' 'she is breech'.

i cant see it in my notes about the gender, but wondered if it was on their computer notes somewhere?
or could just be she didn't want to say 'it' or 'baby' so she refers to all babies as 'she'.

what do you think? i'm not bothered either way by the gender but it would just be unfortunate to get to the end and then be told 😂

It’ll just be a figure of speech. I’m a midwife sonographer and the sex of the baby is never recorded unless the parents ask to be told and even then only on the scan report and nowhere else.

I don't think it's in our notes. In my last pregnancy once I was in labour the midwives kept asking what we were having so I assume they had no idea

They don’t know but unless it is known most seem to have a default that they like to use. My midwives all used ‘he’ and some even said they thought it was a boy - baby was a girl!

Mine used to swear she could tell from the heart rate. She was right each time for me, (but obviously anecdotal evidence isn’t data)

Fab, that’s what I thought!

No they don't know. At my appt last week she kept saying 'he' and I asked her and she said it was just habit and no she doesnt know the sex anymore than I do 🤣

WhatAPoolava · 03/10/2022 13:03

I had a boy and my midwife always said she/her 🙈

Cakecakecheese · 03/10/2022 15:47

At my booking in appointment the midwife referred to the baby as he and there's no way anyone knew the sex that early!

littlemissalwaystired · 03/10/2022 16:04

I'm a midwife and I promise you we have no idea! I often accidentally refer to the baby as whatever I've seen the most of that dayGrin if a lot of people tell me they're having a boy, every baby then becomes a boy. Or if someone tells me they already have a son for example I'll just assume this is a boy too😂

So ask her if she knows the sex - I suspect its just a turn of phrase.

WonderWoop · 03/10/2022 22:53

Be careful with this, I fell for the accidental trap!
Thought they must know so assumed baby was boy ('he'). Bought boys clothes, painted nursery blue etc etc. Came out a girl. I've never been more surprised 😂

Yes. I spotted it on a scsm report on the desk at a midwife appt with my youngest.
My middle child I was bring prepped for caesarianand a student midwife let slip.

I wouldn't put much thought into what they said. I knew the sex of both my babies but DD was often called he and DS she. They deal with dozens of bumps a day so it's easy to loose track of which are he/she or unknown.

Also she maybe didn't want to say they incase you panicked it was twins, but it doesn't feel right either?
