High TSH level and recurrent miscarriage

Hi all,

I have had 4 miscarriages in the space in 9 months and i think it might be down to my TSH levels. I had a blood test in June and my TSH level was at 5.6. I have read it should me max 2.5 when ttc so not sure why i was never given anything even though the doctor was aware of my history.

Following this blood test i had 3 chemical pregnancies back to back and now have stopped ttc until further investigations.

I have another blood test this week so will see what that level is but should i be on some sort of medication with my level being this high and ttc?

I have an appt at CRP clinic with Dr Sheheta next week too but is it worth going to him when i could just start taking medication for my thyroid and hope that will do the trick?

Any information/ advice is much appreciated

Thanks in advance xx

Hi there, not sure how useful my experience is but thought I'd share as it's something I've been worried about. I had a MMC in Dec last year and did a private blood test in Jan after reading underactive thyroid can cause miscarriage. My TSH was 8. I then begged the NHS to do a blood test which I got a few months later and it was 5.5. They reluctantly gave me thyroxine at a very low dose (25mg) and I got to about a 3.5. I've finally got pregnant again and read you need to immediately increase you medication and the optimal range is under 2.5. Doctor won't see me til mid October, and they won't give me another blood test until I see the doctor, so I've just upped my medication dosage to 50mg based on what I've read online - NICE guidelines and British thyroid association, so legit sources rather than Dr Google I hope! Either way, I not willing to risk another miscarriage if thyroid is the issue.

I would 100 percent ask for thyroid medication if it's at 5 - it's still out of range and what's classed as subclinical. I ended up being quite annoying and kept asking for it because a female boss at work told me just to advocate for myself and not take no for an answer.

I hope that helps in any way! X

@MO22 sorry to hear about your loss 🥺 and yes the GP doesnt seem to give medication for this as easily as they should but not sure why?

I will keep this in mind! Im going to wait and see if my level is still high this month and then urge them for something.

Wishing you a healthy pregnancy 🤰🏻 🙏🏻

Thanks for responding xx
