I am so pissed off. All this time I’ve managed to avoid covid and now I’ve got it at 37 weeks. Went into hospital to be monitored as had elevated heart rate due to what I thought was a cold :(

I’ve now been told I need to be on blood thinning injections for 14 days!! And will be sent home with an oxygen pack to monitor my oxygen daily.

has anyone else has experience of this? Previous threads I’ve read no one has mentioned blood thinning injections so I’m a bit worried! Also has anyone else had covid this late on and still managed normal delivery? I’m worried I’ll be told to opt for c section! :(

I'd not heard of people being given blood thinning injections, but presumably that's because covid is a cardiovascular disease as much as a respiratory one.

You need to talk to your team about the safest means of delivery.

Which will rather depend on how the disease progresses, and when labour begins. As you're 37 weeks, then you could be recovered before your baby wants to make an appearance

SassyPants87 · 02/10/2022 06:18

@chantico really hoping I do get the chance to recover in time but previous DD came 2 weeks early so I hope this one stays put a while

Sounds like they're monitoring you well and have a treatment plan. Thankfully there's a lot more medical knowledge about Covid now.

Hopefully you've had your vaccinations to protect you and baby.

I hope you recover quickly.

Spicycurry · 02/10/2022 06:24

Poor you! Try not to worry though, they have to monitor because covid can be more dangerous in tri 3 but because it can be doesn’t mean it will be if you see what I mean, and chances are you’ll be absolutely fine, especially if you’re otherwise healthy and have been vaccinated. Hope all goes well Flowers

SassyPants87 · 02/10/2022 06:25

@Lindy2 they are definitely being thorough with me. Yes I’ve had vaccinations, I came in thinking I had a mild cold and elevated heart rate due to a slight temp

Not covid in pregnancy but blood thinning injections are commonly given for all sorts of reasons in pregnancy and post partum as blood clots are more likely. I was borderline needing them for my entire pregnancy (hyperemesis, family history of blood clots, and age). The consultant told me if I had one more risk factor I would be given them. I had injections for 10 days post birth.
There is a known increased risk of clotting with covid so they are reducing your risk of complications.
Rest up and hopefully you have a swift recovery.

firstbabyworries · 02/10/2022 06:29

I was on blood thinning injections when I had DS. Didn't have COVID but other complications. Had to inject at home once I was discharged. I found it ok, most annoying thing was trying to get rid of the sharps bucket at the end!

surreyisik · 02/10/2022 06:30

I had it at 30 weeks last year and given blood thinning injections as well as an extra ultrasound appointment. I was triple vaccinated by then. It was like mild cold for me and I was on my feet by day 2. Hope you recover soon 💐

Gompurtz · 02/10/2022 06:32

Yep, I had blood thinning injections at 38 weeks due to covid- was fine!

surreyisik · 02/10/2022 06:35

Forgot to add - I was admitted for natural delivery in the end, so no issues there either! Mine was a bit earlier than yours but I was truly fine in a couple of days.

SassyPants87 · 02/10/2022 06:49

Thank you everyone, definitely making me feel a lot better about it!

@surreyisik good to know you still managed to have natural delivery! DD came early so hoping this one doesn’t to give me time to recover

@Gompurtz oh wow 38 weeks! Did it manage to clear before baby came and did you have vaginal delivery?

OP posts:
passport123 · 02/10/2022 06:51

If you've had all 3 vaccinations it shouldn't be too severe. Good luck xx

Gompurtz · 02/10/2022 07:15

I did! I hope I'm not being obtuse but why would it mean that you can't have a vaginally delivery? It wasn't mentioned to me at any point (I don't think- was so exhausted at that point in pregnancy with a toddler that I may well have forgotten!)

SassyPants87 · 02/10/2022 07:33

@Gompurtz thats great! Not being obtuse at all! The doctor just mentioned it to me saying we’d have to establish birth plan as I guess they’ll have to see what I’m like closer to the time

OP posts:
Gompurtz · 02/10/2022 07:39

I see. Will keep everything crossed you're fully recovered in time for when baby arrives!

SassyPants87 · 02/10/2022 15:43

Thanks @Gompurtz I’m feeling so rough with it and now my toddler has it too! 😔

I got covid at 37 weeks and went into labour at 37+4 while still very unwell. Normal delivery and baby was totally fine. I then had injections for 2 weeks after giving birth.

Amymamabear89 · 02/10/2022 19:13

I caught covid last year at around 18weeks pregnant, I got very poorly with it and pregnant women I believe have a increased risk of blood clots generally etc which thanks to covid I had little blood clots and pneumonia on my lungs i had to take them for the rest of my pregnancy, and longer (they told me 3months) though if not breast feeding you can have a tablet form. This was down to how poorly I was so it may be differed. I know it’s horrid but it does get easier and it’s just to keep any POSSIBLE blood clots at bay! I’m fine, baby is fine. Only thing they will probably say is at a certain point (only after discussed with doctors obviously) they will want you to stop for a specific time before birth purely in case of C-section etc they won’t want you on blood thinners. I know it sounds scary, but You’ll do great! X

SassyPants87 · 03/10/2022 06:47

@ocelotka123 that is literally what scares with me the most, going into labour whilst being really unwell. I feel like I’ve been hit by a truck! Did you kind of forget about the covid symptoms due to the adrenaline of labour?

@Amymamabear89 I'm currently 37+2 and need to take the injections for 2 weeks so I’m cutting it super fine and don’t think I’ll have the chance to stop taking the injections in time unless I go over

oh well we’ll just have to see what happens

I had covid in July at 36 weeks. I also had a really high heart rate so they gave me an ECG, chest x-ray and lung scan!! Very thorough! All was fine so I was sent home with 10 days of the blood thinners. The injections are standard for any pregnant women with covid at my trust. The thought of them is worse than actually doing them. I hope you're feeling better soon

cultkid · 03/10/2022 07:19

I had them for covid but I was 25 weeks so it was earlier

Are you worried about bleeding during the birth? I think you deserve to be able to meet with a consultant to discuss this?

Sending love I hope you feel better soon

RebeccaCloud9 · 03/10/2022 07:20

Blood thinning injections and extra monitoring is standard practise for Covid in pregnancy. I had them at 7 months when I got it, as did the 3 other Pg women I work with around the same time. It's a precaution because of the elevated risk of clots in COVID added to the elevated risk in pregnancy. You'll get them as standard after a c section too, and sometimes after a natural birth.

Mine were only 12 hours that I had to be off them before birth/section, so not long. If you show signs of labour or needing a section, they'll advise you to stop.

DragonMovie · 03/10/2022 07:22

I tested positive for covid at 38+5 and went into labour the next day. Had a natural delivery and all was fine.

ocelotka123 · 03/10/2022 07:55

@SassyPants87 oh definitely! Forgot all about it during labour. It hit me hard a few hours later though, I guess when adrenaline wore off.

Amymamabear89 · 03/10/2022 10:13

It sounds like yours is more precautionary. As opposed to you currently having clots. I’d honestly do want was mentioned above and contact your midwife/consultant for a chat to put your mind at rest. I THINK I only had to stop 24hrs ish before I was induced so you should be fine hun.
