Low amniotic Fluid 18 weeks Pregnant

Hi Everyone, Im 18 weeks pregnant and have been bleeding pretty much throughout my pregnancy which started around the 11th week and hasn’t really stopped since 😔 Yesterday I had to go in for a detailed scan as they detected a raised AFP hormone in my blood tests and suspected there could be a problem with baby’s spine as the hormone is linked to spina bifida. I was relieved to find out baby is developing well and spine and brain are ok, however they said there isn’t enough fluid around the baby and they believe it is due to ‘my placenta playing up’ which is where they think the bleeding has been coming from. I have been put on to consultant led care and need to be scanned fortnightly. But I’m just so worried now and can’t stop thinking about it. Every time I wipe there is still blood and I don’t know whether I’m loosing anymore fluid or not. I’ve searched high and low on the internet on how I can improve it but it just seems there’s nothing I can do really 😔 apart from wait and hope every two weeks things improve.
Has anyone been in my situation with the placenta playing up (docs words) & low fluid at this stage and had a positive outcome? Would really love to hear anyone who’s been in a similar situation or have any advice. Xx

Have they told you to take 150g aspirin daily with your evening meal? I have low Papp-a which is suspected to be another sign of law functioning placenta and I’ve been given this for both pregnancies from 12 weeks.

Your case might be different bc of the bleed but worth calling your midwife to ask.

are you taking any vitamins like pregnacare max? They have folate, fish oil, lots of good stuff.

are you doing a lot of physical work? I had cramps every time I spent a day on my feet.

hope all goes well for you.

Hi CristinaNov182 Thanks for replying 😊 I was in maternity triage on Thursday because the bleeding had gotten heavier the nurse did ask if I’m taking aspirin, I assumed she thought I may be in discomfort but I haven’t had any pain. I told her I had always been advised to avoid aspirin due to having asthma and nothing else was said about it. Maybe there is an alternative, I could definitely speak to my midwife about it.

I’ve been taking the pregnacare vitamins and minerals since the day I found out I was pregnant 😊

And I have stopped doing anything too physical since the bleeding started at 11 weeks. I tried resting up lots but found the bleeding was heavier. So I’m now not resting as much and bleeding isn’t as heavy but still making sure I do rest and nap in the day.

Thank you, I really hope so 😔 x

There are alternatives, I think one is clexane- it’s a blood thinner as a daily injection. It’s usually given to women who have blood clotting issues, it thins the blood, like the aspirin, you probably don’t need the dosage for blood clots, but I’m sure they can adjust. I got clexane too, for few weeks (even couple of months don’t remember) after I gave birth.

There are probably other drugs too. See if you can ask them as soon as you can to get your placenta some help. Good luck

Thank you 😊 I will defo speak to my midwife about it. I have an appointment with her Tuesday to discuss what is going on and to ask any questions. Just really hope there’s something they can do to help.
thank you x
