Early scan and recurrent miscarriage

Hi I’m hoping someone can give me some advice. I have a history of recurrent miscarriages . I have had 3 in a row and have just found out I am pregnant again. In order to get progesterone the NICE guidelines have stated that a visible intrauterine pregnancy (gestational sac) must be seen before they can be prescribed. I am 4 plus 3 today so had a scan this am. A gestational sac was seen which was great. However when I checked the measurements against what google said they should be I am measuring behind. I know it is super early but my anxiety is so high at the moment. Has anyone experienced this and also had success on aspirin and progesterone after recurrent loss?

@Mamofboyd sorry you have this anxiety- google is the devil's work.

I had three mc in a row and pushed for progesterone... I got it fairly easily without a scan and started it at 5 weeks. I also took aspirin throughout. I had a great pregnancy and birth and DS is now 5 months.

I did have lots of early scans from 6 weeks as I was under professor Regan and when I shared my deeeep anxiety of scans with her she waved her hand and told me that dates could be 'a week out' at this point and she wouldn't be worried.

The only thing you can do is push for the medication and then try to distract, distract, distract.

Thanks so much for replying. I am so pleased to here aspirin and progesterone worked for you. I am keeping everything crossed. I am on NI so maybe different protocols but I wish I didn’t have to have the scan so early. It’s just caused me so much more anxiety 😟

I know, sometimes too much knowledge is a bad thing for anxiety 😞

One thing I would say - and obviously check with your doctor - but I couldn't bear the thought that the progesterone could irritate my cervix and cause a bleed so after the first few I put them up my bum instead (sorry TMI). Much less messy and I didn't have any issues. Was assured that it wouldn't make any difference to absorption.

I really hope this is the one for you.

Thank you so much. Before I became pregnant this time I knew I had to face the possibility of a negative outcome but once you are pregnant is is much harder not to become attached. I love to hear positive stories like yours. Ive had lots of tests after the miscarriages but nothing has come back as being wrong. So hopefully the aspirin and progesterone work. My consultant has prescribed them rectally thankfully 😅 trying to stay positive. Feel like I have been pregnant forever. Time is going so slow

@Mamofboyd sorry to hear of your recurrent loss. Hope this continues well for you. I have had one early miscarriage for my first ever pregnancy last week at 5 weeks : ( really down about it and I am 36 so concerned about my age. Be great to hear how you get on.

Mamofboyd · 02/10/2022 21:04

Oh I am so sorry to hear you are going through this. It is very very tough. Just be very kind to yourself over these next few weeks and I hope you have good support . I will keep you updated. I am really trying to be hopeful that the aspirin and progesterone will work for me this time. I have read a lot of success stories. am 38 so I am also concerned about egg quality too. I have another scan in 2weeks just keeping my fingers crossed and stay positive! Different pregnancy , different outcome is my mantra x

@Mamofboyd thanks so much for responding it really is hard isn’t it. I naively had no idea about any of this I just thought you got pregnant and had a baby - it’s been like that for all my friends! Honestly kicking myself about leaving it to start trying at 36. All I am praying for is a healthy happy baby me and my partner get to take home. I honestly feel completely floored by the whole experience. By the time I got my head round the fact I was pregnant, then I wasn’t. It’s been a hard week. I am going to ring my GP and ask about progesterone tomorrow. I have every positive vibe crossed for you and sorry you’ve been through so many losses. Do you already have a DC? I just want to get pregnant again ASAP but been advised to wait until after cycle from miscarriage, it feels like forever already! X

@LAURAPAX I’m really sorry for your loss, I had a miscarriage in my first pregnancy at 6+5 and I was absolutely devastated. However I knew I wanted to try again straight away and did a lot of research into it - it seems to be bit of a grey area but I couldn’t find anything based on medical studies to say that you should wait, and actually some organisations (like Tommy’s and Mayo Clinic) which say as long as there isn’t a specific medical reason you’ve been told to wait (eg because you had a d&c and your lining needs time to heal) you can try straight away, it just might cause addition stress because it can be hard to date a subsequent pregnancy if you haven’t had a period. I hope you fall pregnant again quickly.

@Mamofboyd sorry for hijacking the thread a little there. I’m so sorry for your losses and I’m wishing you all the best for this pregnancy, pregnancy after loss can be so hard. I’ve been on progesterone since 5 weeks as I had some early bleeding in this pregnancy (although I’ve only had one miscarriage) and I’m now 16 weeks.

LAURAPAX · 03/10/2022 19:18

@Hrf1503 thank you for replying, yes i want to try again straight away, it will be a week since my mc tomorrow so will take a pregnancy test and hope that is negative so nothing further to do and can crack on. I emailed Tommy's and they advised to wait until first period. I'm torn as i just want to be pregnant again to be completely honest. Great to hear your pregnancy is progressing well. How did you get progesterone after 1 mc? did your GP prescribe it for you? TIA xx

Hrf1503 · 03/10/2022 20:17

@LAURAPAX The EPU prescribed it to me as I went in with early bleeding in this pregnancy. The NICE guidelines are to prescribe progesterone where there is early bleeding in pregnancy after miscarriage (regardless of the number of previous miscarriages) www.tommys.org/tommys-research-helps-inform-national-guidance-around-progesterone-treatment-prevent-early

I was really fortunate and got pregnant again straight away (I didn’t have a period in between). I was tracking my ovulation using LH tests and temp so it didn’t cause me stress in terms of dates which is what the Tommy’s advice seems to be based on - www.tommys.org/baby-loss-support/miscarriage-information-and-support/trying-again-after-miscarriage

LAURAPAX · 03/10/2022 20:57

@Hrf1503 thanks for this and for explaining. I am hoping my test is negative tomorrow so I can continue moving forward, I’m ordering a thermometer as we speak! I wasn’t really tracking my cycle before just knew roughly when I would be ovulating but want to make sure I maximise my chances this time.
If you don’t mind me asking were you spotting when you went to the EPU or bleeding more heavily? My Mc just gone I had light spotting which I googled and assumed it was the uterus expanding for baby but then next day is when I was really bleeding and went to my GP who confirmed MC.
So glad things are going well for you, how far along are you now? Xx
