Maternity Pay

Just wanted to know peoples typical maternity pay experiences?

I know each company is different and I wont know until I ask but I'm not at 12 weeks yet so cant have that chat. No woman in this company has ever taken maternity so I have no comparison.

What do companies usually pay?

There's nothing in the employee handbook/my contract that gives me any clues

Thankyou :)

Ask your company not mumsnet. No one can give you an answer to this .

MyPurpleHeart · 30/09/2022 15:27

I asked for typical maternity pay experiences. What others experienced

Well people can experience anything from full pay for 12 months to the opposite. What is the point here?

Littlegoth · 30/09/2022 15:30

There isn’t a typical pay. Some pay the bare minimum (see statutory maternity pay for this), some pay full pay throughout - although these are very few and far between. The rest fall between this. The best maternity pay policies are likely to be public sector, the worst paying are likely to be retail or care industry.

Littlegoth · 30/09/2022 15:31

I work in HR so I’ve seen a lot of variance.

missbipolar · 30/09/2022 15:35

Op is it a small company? (Just because you say nobody there has ever taken maternity)

dementedpixie · 30/09/2022 15:38

You'll probably end up with statutory maternity pay. 90% of salary for 6 weeks and then £156.66 for the next 33 weeks. The remaining time off is unpaid

HunterHearstHelmsley · 30/09/2022 15:38

I work for a large charity. We only offer statutory. It really surprises me as we are paid 8 months full sick pay!

Friends of mine at various companies/organisations have had the same. Other than NHS.

ChristmasJumpers · 30/09/2022 15:42

Ours is 2 months full pay, 4 months half pay plus statutory maternity, then 3 months of just statutory maternity. 3 further months of unpaid leave if we want it

thisismyusername321 · 30/09/2022 15:45

If there's nothing in your company policies etc then it's likely you'll only get statutory pay

IneedcoffeeinanIV · 30/09/2022 15:48

Mine is 16 weeks full pay, a few weeks (can't remember how many) half pay and then SMP. We also get 10 keeping in touch days that are full pay

madmeadows · 30/09/2022 15:50

6 months full pay, 3 months statutory, 3 months unpaid- corporate law firm

dementedpixie · 30/09/2022 15:51

Everyone can take advantage of 10 KIT days as agreed between you and your employer

dogmum93 · 30/09/2022 16:02

Mine is 24 weeks full pay, 15 weeks SMP. As pp said though, there's such a range on offer you really just need to ask. It's likely SMP if there's nothing in the handbook. Just message HR and say you are curious about the maternity policy?

itsmschanandlerbong · 30/09/2022 16:05

6 weeks 90% pay, 33 weeks half pay plus statutory maternity and the remaining 13 weeks is unpaid. Entitled to 10
KIT days.

BonesOfWhatYouBelieve · 30/09/2022 16:07

I'm assuming your company is small if no one has taken mat leave before? I'd say statutory pay only is the most likely in this case.
I get 5 months full pay, and 4months statutory, but there isn't really a "typical" amount.

mummyh2016 · 30/09/2022 16:09

SMP. If you aren't aware of an enhanced maternity policy it's unlikely there will be on. SMP is 90% pay for 6 weeks then 33 weeks at around £150 a week.

DuckTails · 30/09/2022 18:14

I’m in exactly the same position so this thread is really helpful. If it turns out ours is statutory only I am going to ask them if this can be changed since it’s really not befitting for a company of our brand calibre (well known name) and values. So it’s good to know what others are offering.

Apparently NHS used to offer 3 months full pay, 3 months half pay and the rest statutory.

Rosesandteacups · 30/09/2022 19:46

Mine is 6 months full pay and 3 months statutory but I know this is good in comparison to many. I’m in financial services

justanotherlaura · 30/09/2022 19:52

I work for a tech company and get 16 weeks full pay then on to statutory. My friend works in a call centre and gets 6 months 90% pay

OrcaBlondie · 02/10/2022 22:36

I work for the NHS and get:
8 weeks full pay then
18 weeks half pay plus SMP then
13 weeks SMP only then
13 weeks unpaid

Loulou1712 · 03/10/2022 08:27

If your contract/policy doesn't specify anything specific I'd assume that you'll only get statutory maternity pay.

I get 6 months full pay, 3 months statutory and 3 months unpaid along with accruing all my annual leave/Bank Holidays and kit days. Unfortunately not everyone's so lucky x

AlwaysFoldingWashing · 03/10/2022 08:37

I think I got 6 weeks at 90% then 18 weeks at 50% due to length of service and the SMP for the rest of the time, up to one year in total. Also done the 10 KIT days

bravotango · 03/10/2022 09:13

I work for a small company and get 3 months full pay, 3 months half pay, the rest stat.

summergone · 03/10/2022 11:08

I got the 90% for 6 weeks then the standard SSP. I was very surprised to get tax back every month
