Fertility specialist after reoccurring miscarriages

Hi all,
I'm looking for a bit of advice/shared experience. I've been through previous threads but they don't seem to relate to my situation.

My husband and I had a child 2.5 years ago and since trying for another, have had 3 consecutive miscarriages all at 5/6 weeks. Our last pregnancy we were hoping to be given Cyclogest (which a lot of people have sworn by), but we were told they could not see the pregnancy on a scan as I was too early, and they had to ensure the pregnancy was in the correct place before prescribing Cyclogest. We were told to come back in another week or two. Unfortunately, I miscarried a few days later. Our GP has now referred us to a fertility specialist but I know it could be a long wait time. I'm 35 and very conscious that I'm running out of time.

Have any of you been referred to a specialist after reoccurring miscarriage and did you have to wait long? I'm unsure if I should pay for private fertility tests in the meantime to speed up the process?

Any advice is welcome! - Thank you xx

Hello 👋 I'm so sorry you're going through this it's devastating and so hard ❤️ sounds v similar to me, I have a 2 year old DD and when we started TTC no 2 in Dec last year, I've since had 3 recurrent miscarriages all at 5 or 6 weeks as well. I am now pregnant a fifth time and I'm nearly 13 weeks so hold out hope, I'm sure it will happen for you!

And yes get yourself cyclogest. I suggest getting referred to a Tommy's miscarriage clinic specifically they are really good and some have shorter wait times than the usual ones. Are you near Coventry? The Tommy's clinic at Coventry hospital has a much shorter wait time than the others, I was seen for all my blood tests within a month of my previous miscarriage. I was actually already pregnant at that time but not even 4 weeks so they did the tests anyway and gave me progesterone there and then. I am on progesterone (cyclogest) 400mg twice a day till 16 weeks. There are also Tommy's in London and Birmingham but they have longer wait lists. I suggest calling up the Tommy's midwife line and speaking to them, I found them so helpful and so so glad I did.

If you aren't near a Tommy's clinic or the wait times are too long, I would contact a private GP and get a prescription for cyclogest so you can take it right from a BFP. Then get a scan at epau at 6 weeks and hopefully if all is well they'll give you more right up to 16 weeks.

You could also try aspirin? I know some women have success with this.
There is also the book it starts with the egg which can help with getting eggs into best quality, and make sure your DH is taking fertility vitamins etc stuff to keep his sperm healthy!

There's also a great website which I found helpful called natural-fertility-info.com (I think) xx

Sending lots of love and luck, it's a horrible position to be in, but have faith - the fact you have one child is a great sign and I'm sure you'll have another little one, you just need some good support. X

Hi there, I have had 7 losses since last November. All tests fine and before I went to a specialist I decided to try NAC and omegas. I'm now just over 5 weeks (never got past 3 before) I'm convinced they helped, have a look into them, NAC in particular. I had twins 2 years ago so we'll see what's in store this time. Don't discount the stress of the last years too. It's taken a huge toll on us all

Ah that's really reassuring @Skylark1990 thank you so much for all that useful information and congratulations! I've contacted Tommy's but they said I can't be referred if I have a referral elsewhere. I don't live near Coventry, I live near Windsor but I would have travelled. I also looked at a private GP and it's £45 for a 15 minute telephone call but not sure how many apts or even tests I would need for them to prescribe me cyclogest.

@Twinmammyirl im sorry to hear about your previous losses, but congratulations on your pregnancy! I will give NAC a go and I will also try aspirin until we are given a date from the specialist.

I contacted 2 private fertility clinics and it's £540-£590 to test me and DH. I'm due my first period since miscarriage next week so will start trying after that. Should I take NAC and aspirin from TTC or from getting a BFP?? x

I had been referred to my local clinic too but I just chose to go with Tommy's instead. You can definitely choose Tommy's, you can be referred to both then pick the one that gets back to you with dates for tests etc quickest. This is what I did. I'm surprised they said you couldn't? I'd try again as the Coventry one was so quick for me x

The GP should be able to prescribe cyclogest after a phone consult I'd say, but you'd need to go to a gynaecologist as sometimes normal GPS can't prescribe it

No you can use NAC now unless you're on afew medications which it interacts with, you can check online incase you are. it's an antioxidant and has been shown to help prevent recurrent miscarriage. NAC links I personally like to keep things as natural as possible so I'm hoping for the best with this. Omegas also help blood flow to the uterus which I feel has helped

Hi @Skylark1990 i just wanted to make contact and say thank you. Because you pointed me in the direction of Tommy's, I did get referred and seen and they gave my cyclogest there and then. I'm now 22 weeks pregnant and planning a babyshower/fundraiser for Tommy's. I just wanted to reach out and say that because you took the time to write about your experience with Tommy's, I too had a happy ending :) Thank you xx
