Covid and risk of miscarriage ? First trimester

Princessintherosecastle · 28/09/2022 17:41

Hi, I’m currently ten weeks pregnant and today found out that I’m covid positive 😩.
I had a MMC in Feb so I am absolutely petrified of it happening again.
what are the chances of covid causing a miscarriage? I haven’t got my 12 week scan for two weeks.

My midwife did ask me at my booking in appointment if I had had covid when I had my MMC as they had found women were having miscarriages in the second trimester due to covid.

Please help!

Many thanks 🙏🏻

Oh my gosh; im in the same position! I am 10 and a half weeks pregnant - I tested positive 9 days ago and I'm still positive now! I've had an absolutely awful time with it as well, I've been bed bound for 7 days and obviously straight away when I did the test, I instantly thought, surely this can't be good? Surely it increases a risk of miscarriage? But my midwife told me to NEVER Google anything and only go by the NHS website as this is factual evidence based - and there is absolutely no evidence to suggest that Covid increases your chance of miscarriage.

I'm really shocked that your midwife actually said this about the second trimester as there is no evidence to suggest this at all. This is just scare mongering and completely fact less. It would be interesting to find out where she got this info from and why she would say this on your first midwife appt.

I am only just starting to feel a bit better but my pregnancy symptoms are pretty bad too - nausea has completely ruined me and I've been prescribed anti sickness tablets but surely that's got to be a good sign aye? 🙏🏼

I think Covid does effect us more because we probably have a weaker immune system but there's no evidence at all to suggest that it causes any harm to your baby ❤️

Hope you're not suffering too bad and good luck on your journey ❤️

Hi ladies, I got covid at 10 weeks pregnant and although it hit me like a ton of bricks because I was also suffering with sickness - baba was not effected at all! Currently 26 weeks with a happy healthy bub who was none the wiser. I'd say just keep an eye on your temp as that's the biggest risk but other than that babies are used to us getting colds and viruses and are well protected. Take it very easy lots of water and take some time off work if you need xxx

xalexandra · 28/09/2022 18:53

@hopingfor23 this has made me feel better because I suffered with sickness really bad too! Got my 12 week scan next week so hopefully everything is fine 🙏🏼

Princessintherosecastle · 28/09/2022 18:54

Thank you for the replies! I think I’m just so anxious about it. Have no temp at the min- 36.8 so 🤞🏻🤞🏻 we will all be ok xx

What info was your midwife basing this on? I can’t find any research at all to back that claim up.
I hope you feel better soon and please try not to worry, OP.

Jaaxe · 28/09/2022 19:03

Why is your midwife spreading that info?? Where has she got this from?

You will be fine op don’t worry so many ladies have had covid in 1st 2nd and 3rd trimester and their babies have been absolutely fine.

I had it 2nd trimester at about 16/17 weeks and I did feel a little more rough with covid this time compared to pre pregnancy but after a week in bed I was back to normal. I’m now 27weeks and all fine so far xx

Recycledcurtains · 28/09/2022 19:04

I had Covid and the covid booster during my first trimester (had the booster the day before I tested for covid so a double whammy!)

My baby is now nearly a month old and perfect!

Princessintherosecastle · 28/09/2022 19:06

I don’t know she just said it whilst taking my information at the booking in app. I had my MMC at sixteen weeks so quite late so she said “Did you have Covid? We saw women having miscarriages late on and they had covid”. I thought because she worked on the delivery wards and things it was like medical knowledge? Unfortunately a lot of things in Google say the same so I’ve stopped googling now for a bit of sanity.

I didn’t have covid btw at the time- the dr at the time said it was probably a chromosomal issue 🫤

Don't know the stats, but popping up to say that I had covid at 5-6 weeks, and currently being kicked in the bladder at 30+4.
Was also really anxious when I found out, sending lots of love

LordMooey · 28/09/2022 19:34

Covid at 5 weeks (didn't really feel ill though); now 33 weeks and getting a good kicking like pp!

Mywingshurt · 28/09/2022 19:44

Have you called and spoken to your midwife since getting covid? I caught it at 13 weeks and was prescribed a 10 day course of clexane to self inject - stops clots/dvt apparently; I was told that this is where the miscarriage association/fear comes from.

CristinaNov182 · 28/09/2022 19:54

A cousin had covid during her third trimester, had a few rough days, shivers, high heart rate, tiredness, but she and baby are fine. I don’t think she had temperature, she didn’t say.

I conceived when having covid. It was my 2nd time and was just like a very mild cold, just a stuffy nose, except for having no sense of taste or smell. I had very good vit D level at the time, not like the first time I had covid, when I was deficient and had it very rough.

I’m 15 weeks now so far so good.

xalexandra · 28/09/2022 20:05

@Mywingshurt is this common to get prescribed this? I haven't let my midwife know because I didn't want to bother them about something that I didn't need too. So wasn't sure what to do? X

PinkButtercups · 28/09/2022 20:15

I had covid at 14 weeks now 26+4 and touch wood twins were fine.

No, only if you're pose a higher risk to blood clots. I wasn't deemed too so they didn't do it with me.

You do need to let them know x

xalexandra · 28/09/2022 20:17

@PinkButtercups thanks for the info! Will do! Xx

Loulou1712 · 28/09/2022 21:04

I had covid at 28 weeks, I had a few appointments postponed but apart from that no-one batted an eye. I'm currently 38 weeks and babies trying to escape through my belly button!

EMC2022 · 29/09/2022 07:16

I had it at 8 weeks and it hit me like a tonne of bricks. Not sure why but I had the worst nausea of my life with it!!
Also had all the usual flu symthoms for 2 days (fevel, chills, muscle aches). Stayed positive for around 10 full days.
I'm 37 weeks now and no harm done to baby, in fact he is huge and very strong!
I would ring the MW. For me they just assessed my age, BMI and stage in pregnancy and said they were happy I was low risk and didn't need any blood clot treatment!

i123i · 29/09/2022 15:46

@Princessintherosecastle - try not to stress. I had covid around week 8 with very high temperatures (38-39 Celsius) for 2-3 days and extreme lower back pain. Having had an MC before I was of course terrified, so we paid for a private scan when I recovered (before my 12 week NHS scan) and all was fine.

When I told my midwife she didn't seem worried at all. All scans were fine. Baby size is good. Baby is now 40 weeks, and doing well!! 🙏🏻. If you want to ease your stress, maybe pay for a private scan when you've recovered. ❤️❤️

Princessintherosecastle · 29/09/2022 17:03

Thank you for the replies! I’ve messaged my midwife but she takes ages getting back to me, she might not be on duty.

My 12 week scan is on the 12th Oct so I just need to hold out till then . At least I will be covid negative then 🤞🏻🤞🏻 X x

No, only if you're pose a higher risk to blood clots. I wasn't deemed too so they didn't do it with me.

@xalexandra I scored a zero for risk of blood clots but was prescribed it, assumed it was common practice but perhaps it varies by trust? They also suggested consultant led care may occur later in the pregnancy (didn't ask how they're going to determine this).

OP I also wasn't going to tell my midwife about covid, didn't want to waste anyone's time, a midwife friend told me it was necessary. Let us know how you get on :)
