Hi im 10 weeks and was told at doctors my blood pressure was quite high and she wasn't happy about this-I was high before the pregnancy and she said to get it checked out I would need to see a consultant so im just waiting for that. She said there's probably nothing to worry about when she saw how high it was she was like wow that isn't right-was 124/92 or something. Any ideas what this could be i thought it maybe my weigh but some how I have lost it-mi just under 5ft and 10stones

high BP in conjunction with swelling and protein in the urine needs checking out urgently as it could indicate pre eclampsia, that does tend to occur later in pregnancy though.

but, if you already have high BP that is not pregnancy induced, then that might be a different issue

i would try to speak to a MW about this ASAP

shame your doctor has left you feeling in the dark and worried about this

I had high BP early with my DD1.
Its the bottom number they worry about most and anything higher than 90 is a little worrying. It took be a one off high reading as most ladies BP drops during pregnancy.
I had a stupid reading once but rechecked 10mins later it was fine.
Try not to worry too muich, and get MW to check again soon

Next time your bp is high ask them to leave you alone for about 10 minutes, close your eyes, and take deep breaths. If you walk in and have been in a hurry, going up steps, or even just stressed by the day it can affect your reading.
Make sure that they have the right cuff when they take your blood pressure also. I was about to be sent off to triage and possibly admitted for an induction when pregnant with ds2 because the nurse used the smaller cuff instead of the larger one. One she checked it correctly it was very low.

Hello I have had high blood pressure for 2 years now and taking medication before and now in pregnancy.

The midwife should have explained better but 124/92 is not extremly high so i wouldnt worry. The top value (systolic) is ok as this should be about 125 the bottom one is slightly hish (distolic) average should really be 80

140/90 is when you need to go to hospital and as yours is not that yet do not worry.

What should happen now is you wil be monitored more than in a normal pregnancy by a consultant. I get seen every two weeks to have blood pressure checked and have had to start taking 2 pills a day as it is 132/90 most days.

But dont worry bout taking pills they will not harm the baby and dont worry at moment bout blood pressure they will monitor it very closely. The only time you should worry is if your feet and hands swell up, blurred vision and protein in urine this could be pre eclampsia but again if you are monitored then its not a problem.

As to why you have it and why you might have had it before. There are lots of reasons, heriditary, stress, weight, other problems such as kidneys wtc, too much salt in diet, not enough exxercise or like me no reason at all!!! I have been having tests to find out why for 2 years and there is no reason whatsoever so i just take pills everyday and keep monitored.

Sorry bout long post hope its helped ease your worries and explain more about it Here are some sites that may help but definitely bring it up at next appointment and if you have any other questions dont hesitate to ask!

when my bp was higher than 90 systollic then i always aked them to do it again with the old manual bp monitor as 9 times out of 10 it was a bad reading.my bp was always high when they did it with the small digital monitors for some reason!

i had high bp in all my pregnancies, with ds2 and dd2 my bp went up in early pregnancy but was fine by the time i had my 12 week check.it did go up again from 34 weeks though.

my advice to you is drink plenty of water.a mw mentioned there may be a link between high bp and dehydration when i was expecting ds2.i drank alot more water in my next 2 pregnancies and my bp never went as high as in my first 3.i also cut out salty food as thats supposed to help.

Agree with all the posts, but have you asked them to do the BP measure with a bigger cuff? Couldn't believe the difference in measurement when the midwife at the hospital got the blokes cuff for my nice fat round arm.

My BP gets higher when i have it taken by a medical person. I bought a monitor from Boots and take it at home.

The main thing to do is to have it monitored but also to relax. Whenever i have my BP taken, i imagine that i'm floating in a swimming pool, facing up to the sun and just floating around in peace and quiet. IT WORKS!

You were high before being pregnant so please look into relaxation, talking about fears and you do need to rest as much as you can. Lots of luck and keep talking to us whenever you need to.
