Clexane for heterozygous MTHFR

I have heterozygous MTHFR gene mutation and also been tested for everything else related to miscarriage (other genes, blood clotting profile) and it was clear. No family history of thrombosis.

My consultant (had to go private as dont qualify for Nhs help yet - only two losses) put me on aspirin and progesterone for latest pregnancy and said we can discuss possibility of going on clexane after viability scan at 6 weeks.

She said in my case she doesn't think clexane is a necessity as I'm only heterozygous and both my previous losses don't show a pattern. However, we may want to still do it anyway.

I want to do everything I can but if I could still have a good chance without daily injections that would be great. I'm also not sure if the NHS will fund my clexane if I decide to go on it as I don't think I meet their criteria after speaking to GP so I'd have to pay myself.

Does anyone who is heterozygous MTHFR have any useful insights on successes with or without clexane? I've read various forums which seem to suggest clexane will boost chances of positive outcome but my consultant seems to think it won't make massive difference in my case.

Hi OP do you have any updates on this please? I have had 4 miscarriages, and the only issue identified from private testing is that I also have heterozygous MTHFR gene. After my 3rd miscarriage I was advised to take aspirin in my next pregnancy. I did this, but unfortunately I miscarried again at 5 weeks. I have now been told I will need to try the injections next time round, and just wondering if you have had any success with this? Thanks in advance x

@Sophiey11 I was on Clexane from 5w pregnant after 3 losses - also progesterone and aspirin... prescribed privately and we had to pay for the first lot but my GP had no problem giving it to me on the NHS after that. It worked and we had a healthy baby.

Word of warning though... it also damaged my bones so take high strength vit D and ask about the risk of osteoporosis.

@iammother hi, sorry to jump on but I saw your comment about clexane and how it's damaged your bones, what do you mean by this? I only ask as I've been suffering very bad joint pain in my hands since the end of pregnancy and j also took clexane from 8 weeks

Hi there I have just had aspirin and progesterone in this pregnancy and so far so good, now 23 weeks.

I also take Methylfolate and omega 3 fish oil which I've been told thins blood naturally.

Before this pregnancy I took Nua fertility, coq10, did fertility reflexology and acupuncture. No caffeine, no alcohol. I think detoxing is important with mthfr. I found a lit of info from a Facebook group called mthfr pregnancy and loss

I have heterozygous MTHFR gene mutation too - apparently 40% of the population do so it can't be considered a factor.
I am however on clexane for my PAI-1 homozygous gene mutation (blood clotting issue) which was found after two consecutive miscarriages which both happened after there had been heartbeats and gestational size was more than 7/8 weeks (which I think is a sign it may be a blood clotting issue).
I'm now 20weeks pregnant. Have been on clexane since positive pregnancy test and aspirin since 8 weeks.

@davegrohll Doctors think it was a contributing factor in me developing pregnancy associated osteoporosis - I fractured my spine when my baby was 8 weeks' old and I haven't been able to pick him up since then (he's now 9months).

If in any doubt ask your doctor for a bone scan x

Hi @Yubgftr can you give any recommendations on the brands you take for the methyl folate please ? I am in the uk and struggling to find one. Thank you x

Sure try 'solgar' It's not cheap but it's the one I used and works well.
