Progesterone

Hi everyone,

Apologies for the long post! Just looking for some thoughts although also going to speak to midwife.

I’ve had two chemicals in the past so when I found out I was pregnant this time around I contacted the GP to see if I could have progesterone or if they had any advice, they couldn’t help so put a referral into the OBGYN team. I’ve not heard anything since I’m almost nine weeks now, am early scan at six weeks confirmed embryo in right place and with strong heartbeat.

I’ve just had a call from the doctors receptionist to say they’ve heard back from the OBGYN who has prescribed progesterone until 16 weeks.

I’ve not at any point spoken directly to anyone about this other than the receptionist and I guess I’m just wondering if there is any point in taking it now when I’m almost nine weeks, and if there is a risk of it harming the baby if I take it when I don’t need it.

Both of my losses have been prior to five weeks so I’m well past that point now.

any thoughts welcome!

@Charl881
I would take it, it won't do any harm xx

Betsyboo87 · 23/09/2022 18:02

I had to take progesterone until 12 weeks as part of my FET medication. When my Dr told me to stop I was scared to do he said I could continue to take it until I felt comfortable enough to stop. It would do no harm.

Does anyone know how to get progesterone easily ? I’ve lost two pregnancies but I was told the nhs won’t prescribe it because I haven’t bled.

allgoodthings84 · 01/05/2023 17:08

@Stelladaisy I couldn’t get any after 2 miscarriages as they said I needed 3 before they would prescribe it. I then had some bleeding in this pregnancy at 13 weeks so EPU prescribed it until 16 weeks. The NICE guidelines is after 3 miscarriages unless any bleeding then right away if had any previous miscarriages. I think it’s because it’s not medically proven that progesterone helps unless you’ve started to bleed.

If you go private it’s easy to get prescribed progesterone though

Thanks for the info ! The last time the nurse told me to pretend i was bleeding to get it as the nhs don’t want to fund it I haven’t bled so it’s confusing whether I should pretend as I assume mine miscarriages may have been down to chromosomal issues - I think forking out for a private clinic is the only option ultimately I just want a professional to tell me the truth based on medical evidence rather than on nhs funding model

allgoodthings84 · 01/05/2023 17:26

@Stelladaisy I was only prescribed it because I went to EPU with the bleeding and they also did an internal scan and cervix check so if you’re not bleeding they will know if they want to further check you which I would hope they would want to check if you was bleeding.

Why would you ask for something if you have no idea what it's for? And reluctant to take now it's prescribed.

This is wasting NHS resources.

allgoodthings84 · 01/05/2023 18:44

@Justmyviews it’s an old thread. I was replying to the poster just above who brought the thread back today as she wants to be prescribed it. The OP must be due any day now so hopefully no longer in need 😊

pippabg · 01/05/2023 20:53

@Stelladaisy I was prescribed it by consultant after I attended early pregnancy unit after small bleed at 6 weeks. I was the one who mentioned it as I had one previous loss and he said if I wanted it he would prescribe it as there are no risks in doing so. As he said, if it has an effect its only going to be positive! I felt this was the right approach. I'd try to get seen by the EPU if you can. You might have to tell a little fib about bleeding if they're reluctant to see you, but I know things can get desperate when TTC after loss.
