Sterilisation during c section

Has anyone managed to get this agreed?

I have 3 DC and am unexpectedly pregnant with my 4th despite a coil.

All my babies have been premature and spent time in NICU, I’ve been poorly with all of them, a heart attack with my second!
in my last pregnancy my consultant understood my reasons for wanting to be sterilised but due to my circumstances she couldn’t get consent on ethical grounds, I was 30 weeks, severe debilitating pgp resulting in crutches, having only weeks prior lost my dad suddenly. I under why she thought I wasn’t of sane mind to make such a decision and she offered a coil at the time of delivery instead.

I’m terrified of being pregnant again, of dying during my c section, having an incredibly poorly baby again, it just wasn’t meant to be this way. I’m sure I cannot do it again, I intend to mention sterilisation at every single midwife and consultant appointment so they know I’m not just “fed up”, but has anyone ever actually had sterilisation in c section agreed as I know it’s not commonly done anymore

Any advice on how you felt afterwards? Considering it at my next planned c section. 3 babies. Second section and was looking at vasectomy. Any pain in periods/early menopause or hormonal changes you experienced from sterilisation? Weight gain etc?

@Friendlyear22 sterilisation puts woman in early menopause so yes there will be some hormonal and body changes. Everyone goes through menopause differently so it's impossible to tell before it's done.

Yes, I was sterilised while delivering twins in 2021. I was over 40 and that seemed to put me into a category for consideration. The consultant put together what was basically a business case based on allergy to pill and adverse psychological impact, but really amounted to 'she is very clear she wants it and has no time to regret it if she changes her mind anyway.'

It's grim how the system infantilises women and medical choice. I hope all goes well for you in this pregnancy and you get your way.

Felt absolutely fine, no changes to my body at all and I'm surprised they weren't mentioned if that's common.

I still take the pill but that's because I cba with periods any more.

I have put on weight, but that's because I am now eating the rejected meals of three small children rather than letting them go to waste.

I was offered (and very much encouraged) it with my third c section in 2020. Reasons being maternal age (40+), four kids already, risk of fourth c section not being good).

I declined, but they were very keen to do it!

@Friendlyear22 it depends on how it’s done. I had tubal ligation (they knot the tube then cut the loop at the top), they can use clips on the tubes or they can give you a full hysterectomy. Full hysterectomy will put you into early menopause due to not having a cycle at all once everything is removed. Clips and tubal ligation still allow you to ovulate but the egg isn’t able to implant into the womb or meet sperm so it just dissolves which means I’ll go through menopause when my body decides too (that’s a reason why I chose to have the procedure done I did as I didn’t want early menopause). Previous pregnancies, I ended up on the pill due to none stop bleeding post delivery to try and control it, ended up really spotty and hormones all over the place (also lost all baby weight by 7 weeks). This time less spots, less hormonal, less spots but can’t button up my jeans yet. I have experienced heavier and longer periods but they are more defined (previous PP periods I’d bleed for 4 weeks stop for 1 then start again for 8 weeks then stop for a week where as this time periods are 9 days and then stop for 2 weeks before starting again). I have also experienced ovulation pain both sides (used to only get it one side due to previous ectopic pregnancy). I had to ask for my tubal ligation and was asked on more than one occasion was i sure. The surgeon also lent over the sheet during the c section to ask if I still wanted it doing. I’m 35, 4 children (latest being 13 week old twins) so yes I was sure. Recovery time is exactly the same as a c section just the failure rate is 1/100 as it’s done during a c section when everything is swollen where as normally it’s 1/200. Personally if your unsure speak to your midwife about it and there are lots of things online about it as well if you still can’t make a decision then hold off (tubal ligation is usually done with key hole surgery anyway) so it’s not like you can’t have it done later on and there are other forms of contraception which are less permanent (unfortunately they don’t agree with me as tried them all but I have a sensitivity to certain hormones so my only options were a pill which they look to take you off at 35 because of risk of stroke and breast cancer, condoms or sterilisation)
