Waters broke yesterday but no contractions

I am 40+1 and had my membrane sweep yesterday. As soon as I got home my waters immediately broke and been leaking gradually for around 16 hours now.

I am booked in to be induced on Friday if nothing happens so fingers crossed contractions start naturally!

Just wondering others experience - if your waters broke before labour how long after waters broke did contractions start?

Have you called your maternity unit to let them know? Good luck OP!

My waters broke on DD1 and I had niggles and cramps for 24hours but nothing serious, went into hospital after 24hours and was dilated to 3cm do put straight onto the drip, and she arrived 14hrs later. They usually like you to deliver within about 48hours of rupture to reduce risk of infection (the increased risk is minimal, maybe do you research etc)
I'm pregnant for the 3rd time now and I feel much more informed than that pregnancy, I've been doing the naked doula course where she talks about oxytocin being the driving force behind contractions so maybe do all you can do raise that and hope contractions start soon 🤞(although I think sex is out due to rupture there's no rules against external stimulus 🤣) lots of cuddles, dancing, music, maybe a massage etc whatever makes you feel good!
You got this mama, you'll be meeting baby soon - how exciting is that! x

3rd baby, waters broke early Saturday morning, she arrived safely at home the Sunday tea time after contractions started at lunch. I did go to the hospital to be checked over the Sunday morning and they wanted to induce there and then. We were both OK so I made the decision to wait. Baby was 40wks +3 when she arrived.

@ReeseWitherfork Yes of course 😊 I was at the hospital yesterday and they booked me in for an induction for Friday if I haven’t went into labour naturally by then as risk of infection

This happened to me twice and I never actually got contractions naturally either time! With DC1 I went on the drip to get them started (ended up needing EMCS) and with DC2 when the contractions didn’t start I asked for an ELCS which the hospital were happy to do. I think that’s pretty unusual though, and with DC1 the drip did get them going fine. Good luck!

My waters broke about a day before I started getting contractions. I was booked in for induction on the Friday morning but woke up Thursday morning with painful contractions, naively I called the hospital and asked for them to bring the induction forward by a day as I couldn't cope with the pain for that long! Seems so silly now, so yes of course I went in and didn't need any further intervention as was well on my way.

womaninatightspot · 22/09/2022 08:57

With my first I was booked in for an induction as waters had gone but went into labour naturally. It was fairly quick contractions started about 5pm. I insisted on going to hospital about 8pm. On the phone they were very much first babies take ages to husband. Delivery room for 10pm baby born at 3:30am.

mummyh2016 · 22/09/2022 12:23

Normally they'll want to get you started within 24 hours of waters breaking due to the infection risk, when you called them and told them your waters had broken did they tell you to come in any earlier for induction or tell you to just come Friday as booked? If they aren't offering an earlier induction I would at least have expected them to get you in to monitor you and maybe offer another sweep.

Mine broke at home in the morning, went to hospital to be checked over. Went home.

That evening mild contractions started but as I had been told to go back to the hospital 24hours after my waters had broken anyway I did just that and ended up having to wait around in the hospital till the contractions got stronger and then in active labour.

Ended up having my baby that afternoon about 35 hours after my waters broke.

Erber · 22/09/2022 17:38

First time I was induced 21 hours later as nothing happened on its own. I was 35 weeks so they wanted her out.

2nd time I was 38 weeks and the difference was astonishing. They were happy to let me go as long as I wanted providing I had antibiotics if it went over 24 hours. I chose to go in and get induced but the labour ward was full.so they sent me home and told me to come back later that night. Contractions started on their own around 15 hours from waters breaking, so I ended up not needing to be induced after all.

FirstFallopians · 22/09/2022 17:45

Yes, I thought this was the advice as well. It certainly was 3 years ago when I had my waters break with dc2 and contractions didn’t kick off immediately.

Barleysugar86 · 22/09/2022 17:46

I'm surprised they are letting you go so long. My waters broke around midnight and labour didn't start so I went to the hospital the next afternoon and they admitted me to put me on a drip induction by 8pm - so only twenty hours after they broke. It still took another day or so for the baby to be born.

I really think you should check again with the hospital - they could have you in tonight for the drip. There is no way being induced on Friday you'd give birth within the 48 hour safe window if labour doesn't start?

Sorry, this was in response to @mummyh2016

Might be worth ringing to clarify OP, the HCP I dealt with were really clear that I wasn’t to go beyond 24 hours without being brought in for monitoring and induced.

Helzzzz · 22/09/2022 18:22

My waters broke at 2.30pm and I went to MAU and was sent home to wait. Started with mild period type pains on the way home from hospital about 5pm. Went back to hospital about 7.15am next day and had her at 9am.

I too was told I'd need to come back in 24 hours for induction if nothing happened.

Postpartumreset · 22/09/2022 18:24

Mine never started and I was induced with the drip... Like other posters, this had to be within 24 hours. This was just in July so very recent! Hope things start for you soon.

Amijustagrump · 22/09/2022 19:13

I never had them either! Then went into to be induced after 24 hours, then drip then EMCS.. good luck!
