Please make me feel better about my hyperemesis diet

11w2d and I’ve had hyperemesis since 7 weeks.

Since then I have lived off toast, cheesy pasta, chicken flavoured super noodles, crumpets with peanut butter and the odd piece of fruit or boiled egg. Once or twice I’ve managed a small ‘meal’ such as bangers and mash or spaghetti bolognese. But by small I mean about a mug full.

I have been drinking a can of full fat cola a day as it’s the only drink that settles my stomach. Otherwise squash or more rarely lucozade.

I’m taking pregnacare and had a really good diet before this so hoping I have some reserves, but I’m a bit panicky about just how shit my diet has been and the effects on the baby.

Any ‘this was me and baby is fine’ stories gratefully received.

3 lots of hyperemesis. Eat and drink whatever will stay down! Speak to gp for antisickness medication if required, I've found healthcare workers can be very nonchalant about it so make sure you are informed and insistent. I wish you luck!

heretohelpGB · 21/09/2022 14:12

Had hyperemisis on both pregnancies! Your "diet" significantly better than mine as a good day was a slice of toast and couldn't even manage pregnacare as kept throwing it up again! Despite that had 2 9lb+ babies who are now healthy, sporty teenagers!!!

All you need to focus on now is getting through each day as best you can for your mental health. It is the hardest time and just focus on yourself! Baby will need you soon enough 24/7 Wink

What is it about chicken super noodles? I've been craving them too!

My first pregnancy I ate nothing but toast and coco pops until about 12 weeks and she was fine. I lost a stone but it made no difference to the baby, she was born at over 10lbs!!

GoldenPineapple88 · 21/09/2022 14:17

Bless you 😊 I nibbled cheese and crackers and strawberries and ginger ale for months. Basically nothing else. Had HG all the way through my first pregnancy and was hospitalised twice. I barely ate anything and I lost so much weight you could see all the bones in my spine.

Went into spontaneous labour at 42 weeks (lol) and gave birth to a very healthy 7lb 1oz boy.

Your diet sounds fine. Your baby will extract the nutrition it needs. Try not to worry.

gretagreengrapes · 21/09/2022 14:28

My baby was grown pretty much entirely on a diet of cheerios, salt and vinegar crisps and fizzy haribo with a folic acid here and there for good measure, along with a cocktail of antiemetics. She was absolutely fine during pregnancy, and now is a walking talking toddler also with the same hatred for salad that I had in my pregnancy.

I hope things get better for you hyperemesis wise. It's nothing you have done (I needed to hear this) and it will pass eventually whether that takes 12 or 40 weeks. Good luck and look after yourself.

gretagreengrapes · 21/09/2022 14:30

Just a side note as PP mentioned, pregnacare was making me more sick too. I think it's the iron in it. The midwife gave me the healthy start with just folic acid and vit D in and they stayed down so much better.

workiskillingme · 21/09/2022 14:58

Rice Krispies and those Birdseye chicken burgers were what I lived on! No sauce no seasoning bland bland bland and that was at a push x baby will be fine my last HG pregnancy is a crazy almost seven year old and my first nearly an adult young lady who is the picture of health and normality!

Hoppinggreen · 21/09/2022 15:00

I had awful HG, lost 2 stone while pg.
I ate what I could when I could and took my vits and you have a much better diet than I did.
It will be fine

My friend called her baby the potato baby as she only ate potatoes for the entirety of her pregancy.

He was still a perfect baby.

LaMadrilena · 21/09/2022 15:02

Vegetables made me vomit for weeks. Baby was fine.

AnnaMagnani · 21/09/2022 15:28

Basically babies are really really skilled at getting what they need from their mums. I mean they'll even go as far as dissolving your teeth if they have to! They are absolute miracles at making sure their needs are met.

You might feel like shit but your baby is more than likely having an excellent time.

Blossomingtree · 21/09/2022 15:34

Just out of my 3rd hyperemesis pregnancy. Babies were all fine and healthy! They take everything from you!

Belladonnamama · 21/09/2022 15:40

My SIL could only eat McDonald's chips and plain hamburger, doritos, lollipops and water.

This is unfortunately true so make sure you look after your teeth as well as possible and go to a dentist! Mine helpfully told me that I should have tried to not be sick so much as it has ruined the enamel on my teeth, along with the crap I was eating due to hyperemesis, and the general toll of pregnancy. I'm surprised I still have teeth tbh!

Brendabigbaps · 21/09/2022 15:43

Diet coke
pitta & brie
scotch eggs
jam donuts
the odd fish & chips

i now have a happy & healthy 9yr old, who out of those things only likes the coke!

ChagSameachDoreen · 21/09/2022 15:49

Both my babies were built from McDonalds muffins!

allfurcoatnoknickers · 21/09/2022 15:49

With my first baby, I had HG and terrible food aversions - I basically ate bagels avocado and watermelon and that was it. I had to have a bunch of extra scans because my fundal height was behind and I wasn't gaining weight.

DS came out at 39 weeks and 7.5lbs - your body takes what it needs from you. I lost a ton of weight from my arms, hands, back and feet - my shoes were all falling off, as were my wedding rings and you could see the ribs in my back. I felt like the life was being sucked out of me, but DS was absolutely fine.

I'm 10 weeks with #2 right now and have nausea, food aversions and vertigo, although I've only been sick a few times. All I want to eat is lettuce, toast and sour gummy sweets and it's rubbish. Normally I love food!

Givemeallthegin8 · 21/09/2022 16:04

Ugh I really feel for you , I had hg with my second and it was awful.
My first I was sick for three months - lived off licking salt & vinegar crisps( didn’t even eat them 🤣) and dry cereal and big oranges - for the whole three months !
When sickness had passed I went completely off meat for some reason , ate a lot of crap but still in normal healthy range !

with my second , my diet was absolutely awful. I was so so sick , the only way to feel somewhat better was to eat CONSTANTLY!
Lived off pastry’s and takeaways . I couldn’t cook as the smell of food made me vomit .
my husband would feed dd when he got home from work or I would bring home food from where I worked - school .
I also drank so many different soft drinks - ribena, Fanta, iced tea - anything loaded with sugar

Both very healthy children , no medical issues so they turned out completely fine !

Its really awful , I never got a break from the sickness from 7 weeks until 39 weeks when I had dd. I was taking cariban but was still vomiting at least 5 times a day - awful !
I wish you all the best , eat and drink what you feel like !

Wouldloveanother · 21/09/2022 16:50

Thank you everyone, it’s really heartening to cross ‘damaging the baby’ off my list of worries! ❤️

Just managed a satsuma so I can cross off scurvy as well 😂

This thread has given me reassurance too, and also some ideas for some potentially ok stuff I could stomach! I don't think I have HG but still v sick and struggling to eat much, although how is HG diagnosed?

Piggieintgemid · 15/01/2023 20:21

Don't worry, I had HG with my first and could only eat vegetarian pies and chips. He's 2.5 and so healthy and eats all sorts. It was horrific. I cried a lot and was sick every day, even in labour. Towards the end I would have a whole ball of mozzarella as a snack and cereal in the night and just got so used to being sick.
