Hi,
My son has to have his MMR done and I'm 9 weeks pregnant. Do you know if it's safe for me to vaccinate him now? Any connection?
Thanks.

I'm sure my dd1 had the mmr when I was pregnant. it never occured to me there could be a problem. Why would there be?

Well you'll be told it is. If you're not rubella immune I would personally talk to your GP and consider waiting until you're past the first trimester.

no problem as far as i know!

It is possible to contract rubella from a recently vaccinated child. My daughter caught rubella in this way, I was pregnant at the time but immune. Check this out carefully and do not be fobbed off by anyone claiming that it is not possible to become infected in this way.

You need to find out what your rubella status is.

If you can put it off for a couple of months then why take the risk? Should be easy to rearrange. My dd had her MMR booster yesterday - poor wee love came out saying (in floods of tears) "but why did they do that to me mummy? Why did they hurt me?" Never felt so guilty in my life!

belgo · 24/01/2008 12:06

that's interesting beachcomber. That's not something that is widely known. I had my rubella status checked in early pregnancy so I knew I was immune.

Thanks for your replies. I'm immune to rubella. But what about the measles and mumps? could I be infected with these?

I'm not sure about measles and mumps. However, in theory if the vaccine is prepared using a live (attenuated) virus than it would be possible to be exposed. It would be easy to find this out, it should say so on the package insert which you can consult online.

I don't know what the risks of exposure to measles are during pregnancy but I have heard that mumps carries a risk. I don't have any really specific info though I'm afraid.

I think it is scandalous that this sort of info isn't routinely available. I had no idea that my child (and therefore me as a pregnant women) was being exposed to rubella in this fashion. In the end I was quite happy for my daughter to get the disease, and get it over and done with as it were, but thankfully I was immune and aware of my status.
