Morning Sickness remedy may be causing gestational diabetes- any ideas on alternatives?

I'm 16 wks pg with dc2 and have had hyperemesis since about week 6. I'm out of hospital now and am managing to keep the sickness at bay with a combination of drugs and my own remedy, murray mints

As long as I'm chomping one of my "special sweeties" I don't feel the horrid stomach churning nausea that ultimately culminates in a marathon of toilet hugging.

Saw midwife yesterday and my urine showed 4+ of glucose, so need to have a glucose tolerance test (had one last time round too but nothing found) and she has said that it could be because of all the sweets I'm eating and I could end up creating gestational diabetes for myself

What can I eat instead??? The sugar free sweets don't cut the mustard, chewing gum doesn't work and I'm really struggling to think of anything else that I can try. Really don't want to cause baby and myself problems. But the nausea is so awful I feel like I really need the mints.

Should I just stop the sweets and put up with the nausea and increased sickess- or is there something else I can try in place of the sweets that might do the same job, if you know what I mean. Aaaargh!

Sriously- will post agin when i get back from todays round of stupidity (aka school run and meeting with head and senco) as I do know a bit about HG and meds.

Thanks Peachy, would really appreciate that. Am just about to conduct a similar round of stupidity so will check back in later on.

LeonieD I saw your post yesterday on a similar subject, old Henci really makes sensible arguments. Interesting reading, thanks.

GD is more to do wiht the hormonal changes affecting your body. i had GD, once diagnosed then you have to watch your diet. it may be the sweets in your wee but that does notnecessarily mean u have GD, justthat there is a lot of sugar at that moment in yuor system.

Minkus · 24/01/2008 16:05

Thanks bethoo that was what was confusing me. I thought it made sense for my urine to contain a lot of sugar if I'd been chowing down on loads of sweets but couldn't see how that would cause me to have GD if indeed I have. As LeonieD says, thought that your body can either deal with it or it can't, iyswim.

Apparently sweet cravings mean a girl baby though so maybe I can blame it on her, if the baby indeed does end up being a pink one
