Hi,

Just looking for past experiences! I had an EMCS with my last baby, with complications and major blood loss, for this reason I have to have another c section this time around, I don't get a choice it's too dangerous.

I know for this reason I would be considered a high risk pregnancy so will most likely be consultant led. Can anyone tell me the differences and what this means?

TIA x

You generally just have a couple of consultant appointments on top of your midwife appointments. The bulk of your antenatal care is still done by midwives.

You have all the same midwife appointments in the community, but you will also get some hospital appointments with consultant (or their registrar). Given your problems were Labour (and not during pregnancy) you’ll probably only have a couple.

@Hugasauras @PoppyVioletIris ah thank you both so much!

Consultant led care looks different depending on the reason it's required. I have an existing health condition which pregnancy can exacerbate. The medication I usually took to control it can't be taken in pregnancy as it can damage the baby.

I saw the consultant regularly throughout my pregnancy for bloods and extra scans because of the risk to my health and the fact my condition made me high risk for preeclampsia.

If the concerns are just about the birth you are only likely to have a couple of extra appointments as the midwife will deal with all the regular pregnancy care. .

I was consultant led for my twin pregnancy 7 years ago and then again for my pregnancy with DD last year ( both were c- sections). As others have said , it's nothing to worry about at all. I still had all my usual midwife appointments but also had some hospital appointments on top. A lot of my consultant appointments were done over the phone last year but that was due to covid, obviously each trust is different so will depend how your hospital does things as to whether you have telephone appointments or face to face. Hope everything goes well for you 🙂

Thank you everyone!

I had a large rupture with my section and that was only a year ago so unsure if I'd need more monitoring throughout pregnancy to ensure nothing happens to that area as well! Have my booking in 2 weeks so will find out then x

Being consultant led after a SGA baby, section and previous blood pressure issues has involved the usual apps with the midwives but then growth scans/ review with a doctor afterwards at 32 weeks, 35 weeks and 38 weeks.

I was consultant led and i had alot of appointments and scans but i have a heart condition that is hereditary. Thankfully all children are normal.

I work in labour and delivery, in our unit you wouldn't be allowed in the birth centre with consultant led care, it would have to be the delivery suite. Other than a couple of appointment with consultant as long as everything is ok there's not much difference

@HammerToFall thank you! I have to have another c section anyway so that doesn't make much difference to me x
