I am wondering if anyone can help?
I'm 5 weeks pregnant and have been told by my GP that because my BMI is overweight I have to go through the hospital. I was wondering if anyone else has been through something similar and can tell me what to expect. My GP has freaked me abit and hasn't been any help at all and I haven't got a midwife yet.
Any words of wisdom would be much appricated.

I was told this when PG with DD now 3.

It just meant that I was under a consultant at the hospital as well as my midwife.

I was told that sometimes when mum is over a certain weight the baby can be small, and it can be difficult to feel manually, so I had extra scans to check growth and position.

Allthough at one of my midwife appointments she said my bump was very defined, she could almost see DD!

Dont worry too much, Im sure they will explain all when you see midwife at about 10 weeks.

Im nearly 6 weeks PG with no 3 and still overweight, so Im sure I will be told the same again!

I'm very overweight and with ds1 the only time I went to the hospital was to deliver him.
My weight was also never an issue with ds2 either, until nearer the end when I had suspected pre-eclampsia and was at the hospital nearly every day, being monitored.
I never had any extra scans with ds1,although it did take the sonographer a little longer with both of them as it was harder to see everything she needed to and I was sent for a GTT both times aswell, which was clear.
Hope it all goes well for you.

I'm overweight - BMI of 29 - and 18 weeks pregnant with no2. My midwife has never weighed me, although she did ask for my weight at my booking in appointment, and thinks I'm an ideal candidate for the local birth centre, as long as there are no complications (high blood pressure etc.).

No problems so far with either of my two scans (one private to check viability).

Eat well, keep moving and don't worry too much! Hopefully your midwife will be able to reassure you.

Good luck

How overweight are we talking? If it's little enough for this to be a shock to you I wouldn't worry too much. I was technically overweight in my last pregnancy and popped out a 8lb baby perfect in every way!

Going through the hospital generally means you will see a consultant twice in your pregnancy - no hardship really, nodding and smiling normally does it.

Congratulations btw on your pregnancy!

From friends' experience, if your BMI is over a certain number you'll be under a consultant as certain risks are higher for overweight pg woman (gestational diabetes for eg). OTOH, if you don't experience any problems during pregnancy you prob won't notice much difference in your care and you could still have a home birth etc. if you wanted

Thanks for the reasurance ladies
I have no idea what my BMI is but I'm about 5 1'/5 2' and 15 stone which I think puts me quite high on my BMI.
Thanks for the congrats your the only people who know as we're wanting to wait a couple of weeks before we tell everyone but I think my mum might have a sneaky suspution!

Congrats

I was extremely fat with my pregnancy

my local hospital and GP and Midwife thought it was problem but then I went to London hospital and they didn't care 2 hoots

This was 12 years ago, though

Hi Your BMI is about 38 it is normal practise for anyone with a BMI over 30 to be referred to the hospital as they believe believe being the operative word that women over this are more at risk from pre eclampcia and Gestational Diabetes. I have a BMI of 36 and was referred to the hospital with my DS and this time (I am 26+5) I have to have an extra scan at 34 weeks to check the size of my boy and also am having the GTT test next week (had this with DS and was all clear) I really wouldn?t worry about it too much I think its more of a procedure thing more than anything. Have a Lovely Pregnancy
