Sleeping is just torture 😩

I'm suffering from really bad hip pain at the moment... it's 5:30am and I think by this point I've slept for about 3 hours. I've ended up giving up altogether and going to sit on the sofa. How are you guys doing it? I have pillows wrapped around my entire body amd in between my legs, but that's not helping. I think a massive part of the problem is our mattress, but we're moving house in 2 weeks and switching to a king size so there's no point changing the mattress now. I've tried lying on top of pillows, blankets, you name it, but the hip pain persists 😵 even the opposite hip is burning as soon as I move my top leg in the slightest.
I used to sleep about 10 hours straight on my back 🤣
Anyone else suffering and managed to come up with a decent solution?

Hi op, how far along are you? I'm 19 weeks and had a very similar night last night (not helped by husband and cat who both move to the middle of the bed when asleep). I have hypermobile joints too so have always had hip pain but it's worse now I can't sleep on my back. I spoke to my midwife who said I can take paracetamol and gave me a leaflet on pelvic girdle pain but as with my previous hip pain the main response seems to be "just get on with it and stop making a fuss". It took till I was in my 20's before my GP finally admitted it wasn't just growing pains.
I'm just going to keep on at my midwife but I'm not sure much can be done unfortunately.

@Frida9 oh no 😣 sorry you're going through that! I'm almost 18 weeks, so not far off you, I feel like buying one of those massage tables with the big bump hole in it so I can sleep on my front 🤣 last night was extra awful because I seemed to have about a months worth of round ligament pain squeezed into a couple of hours before I went to bed. Isn't pregnancy beautiful?😅

Hi @Daisychainsx , could you put a duvet under the bed sheet to make it softer in the interim? That’s what I did in pregnancy 1 when we had a terrible mattress and couldn’t afford a new one

Sorry, it’s horrible.

Daisychainsx · 13/09/2022 10:11

@Sallyh87 that's a good idea actually, I'll try that! We do have a big fluffy winter duvet spare so it's definitely worth a try 🤞

Around 17-18 weeks my hip pain was unbearable and I also had sacroilliac joint pain, I couldn't stand, sit, nothing, it was horrendous, my gp prescribed me 30/500mg cocodamol which helped if you're open to pain relief ?
He did say in a few weeks it'll get better and it did, just went away ! I think around that time you must get a big flood of relaxin or something

thunderonlyhappenswhenits · 13/09/2022 10:47

Oh what helped me was not sitting on anything soft, I needed some support under my pelvis

Daisychainsx · 13/09/2022 10:58

Ahh OK, well that's given me hope that i might not be dealing with it until February then 🤞I'm going away for a few days today so it'll be interesting to see if a different bed makes any difference! Here's hoping!

Are you sleeping on your side? You don't actually need to sleep on your back until 28 weeks, the research only shows an increase in stillbirth in the third trimester. The baby and placenta aren't heavy enough before then to affect your vena cava. Make the most of sleeping on your back while you still can!

addler · 13/09/2022 10:59

Whoops, I meant you don't need to not sleep on your back until 28 weeks

Buy a foam or memory foam topper for your bed, you can get just a single and its not too expensive. You will likely want it on the new mattress too. Then add a memory foam lumbar support pillow for sleeping. They look a bit like a double ended penis (sorry but thats the only way i could describe it!). You put it just above your hips when you lie down and it stops your waist sinking down and so your hips stay straight and its so much more comfortable

Daisychainsx · 13/09/2022 11:19

@addler that's good to know, I'd read somewhere (probably just on some unofficial blog!) That it was from 16 weeks, which I did think was super early!

We're staying in a flat owned by DH's parents while waiting for our house so everything in it is just second hand stuff from their main house, hence the lumpy bed, but I remembered i do have a pretty comfy mattress in storage so I've left DH with the job of switching out the mattresses while I'm away this week 😇😅

Never been more excited to go bed shopping in a few weeks time 🤩

Expensive, but bb hugme pregnancy pillow has made a HUGE difference to my sleep this time round - last time had a pregnancy pillow which wasn't as good and didn't find it helped much.
