I’m literally so fed up of being sick now!! I’m only around 9/10 weeks and it’s not constant but every couple of hours if I don’t eat something I’m being sick until I eat 😢 I don’t eat snacks during the day (don’t like biscuits, crisp’s chocolate etc) and usually only have 2-3 meals and finding it really have to eat more often if anyone has any tips or advise that will be extremely helpful xx

Hi @Mum2be86 really sorry you’re experiencing this. I’m in a similar boat, 10+2 and have been really sick and extremely nauseous (& faint & shaky) we’ve been desperately trying for a baby for years and so I’m extremely grateful, but the last month has just been awful.

im afraid I don’t have any magical cure, but here are a few things I’ve found have helped —

  • GP prescribed anti sickness tablets. They certainly reduce the amount Im sick and take the nausea away but the ones I’ve got are a sedative so they send me to sleep. Apparently they get better after a week or so if taking them but I felt drugged by them so only take them on really bad days.
  • Have you checked your blood pressure? mine was quite low which was also making me be sick (dr recommend drinking lots and snacking)
  • Acupuncture travel bands, sometime I think these work other times I’m puking whilst wearing them 🤣
  • changing eating and drinking habits -whilst annoying I’m sure it is helping with blood pressure. I now eat a small meal each night but other than that just snacks throughout the day (peppers, cucumber, tomatoes, dried fruit & nuts, fresh fruit, cottage cheese, rivita basically what ever doesn’t make me want to vomit at the thought of it that day) - I’m still being sick but only a small amount is coming up each time.

really sorry I don’t have a magic cure. Everyone keeps telling me after 10 weeks things should start to improve as your placenta takes over and produces the hormones, so fingers crossed that’s the case for us both. I just thought I’d drop you a message incase any of the above can provide some relief. Xx

Sounds like it would be better for now to switch to grazing throughout the day, rather than waiting to get hungry, as it's clearly not working for what your body needs.

I remember eating a lot of babybel, crackers, cereal throughout the day to try to maintain a feeling of balance.

Ginger! Ginger is your answer. Either powdered or freshly grated in tea or hot water. Proven to reduce nausea and vomiting . Give it a go

Mum2be86 · 13/09/2022 11:26

Thanks all for your comments.
@Agapanthus13 going to try your tips huge thanks and wishing you the best of luck and hope all settles for you soon, my GP has prescribed anti sickness medication today that I can up to 3x daily x

I would amend lifestyle first before reaching for upping the pills. What's wrong with healthy grazing all day? That's what ever pregnant woman I have ever known has to do, me included.

Phillipa12 · 13/09/2022 11:32

Ginger does not work for everyone, infact it was the one thing guaranteed to make me puke when pregnant. With all 4 of my pregnancies I felt sick 247 for the first 14 weeks, grazing helped so I didn't get hungry and randomly with dc1 it was sugary sweets that halted the sickness, with dc2 it was vanilla ice cream, dc3 was oranges and dc4 was granola bars. Don't ask me how I figured it out it was pure chance.

EL8888 · 13/09/2022 12:10

@Phillipa12 ginger doesn’t work for me either

I suggest trying to eat little and often. Plus trying not to get too tired. But l know both things are easier said than done. I struggle to reduce my nausea levels much 🤷‍♀️

LegoFiends · 13/09/2022 12:14

You have to just eat all day in the first trimester. Healthy balanced snacks but just eat every time you feel the need. The crazy hunger doesn’t last long. I ate everything my body asked for and perhaps a little more, and was my pre-pregnancy weight a couple of days after birth. Trying to restrict can lead to less healthy eating sometimes.

Numbat2022 · 13/09/2022 12:28

You will just have to graze throughout the day. It's the only thing that takes away the nausea for a lot of women - crisps were my bestest friend!

Sorry but I had HG and EVERYONE suggested ginger!! It didn't work and now even the smell of ginger turns my stomach.

OP - the only thing that eventually worked for me was grazing on 2 things; Skittles and Mini Cheddars 😂

I was hospitalised a few times but I was prescribed anti sickness pills. The travel sickness acupressure bracelets also did help

TisforTucan · 13/09/2022 16:01

On my 3rd but previously somethings would help and then the next day it wouldnt.

Peppermint tea is good for me right now and was for my last I had bad reflux and ironically my little boy came out head full of hair lol. Travel sick bands maybe? I kept things dry like toast, Crackers, rice cakes and biscuits with my other two and had mad need for salty crackers ect.

Captain1822 · 14/09/2022 04:00

I would definitely say to graze little and often, keep meals simple, stay hydrated and always have emergency snacks on hand.

I found ginger biscuits helped in the long run (calmed my stomach for an hour or so) but after a few weeks I think the biscuits made me gag more than the nausea!
Haribo sweets were my saviour, just the normal rings/ cola bottles etc, someone has recommended them for bad sickness when I was desperate and it worked!

I also could have bought stock in Ritz crackers and mini cheddars.

hope things improve for you soon!

Borgonzola · 14/09/2022 04:05
  1. I had phenergan. Really did help with sickness. Stupidly didn't have it until 14 weeks!
  2. definitely switch to grazing as PP said. Don't see it as snacking, that's not helpful - and don't let yourself get hungry, basically. If you don't like biscuits try rice cakes, crackers, dry toast, cereal or cereal bars, plain rice, etc. dry carbs are effective.
  3. do not be surprised if ginger does dick all. If one more person said to me 'have you tried ginger?' I'd have decked them.
DifficultBloodyWoman · 14/09/2022 04:14

Yup, been there and done that and you have my sympathy. Whoever came up with the name ‘morning’ sickness should be shot.

Morning sickness and Hyperemesis Gravidarum are not the same thing.

Grazing, as you have discovered, works well for a lot of women. Honestly, I wouldn’t fight it. Your body (and life) will change in many ways and this is probably the least objectionable.

Ginger works for a lot of (most?) women but not all ginger products are the same! Raw pickled ginger (as with sushi) worked best for me followed by Ikea’s ginger biscuits. Everything else just made me feel worse.

I don’t particularly like crisps but had two or three packets a day at the beginning of one pregnancy. Carbs, carbs, carbs! If I could have got hold of mini cheddars back then, I guarantee I would have!

If you have HG, your doctor can prescribe medicine for you. But be warned - the side effects can be worse than the vomiting and nausea. I was only able to take the meds for 5 days before I had to give up.

And another word of warning - morning sickness can damage your teeth. I was told to rinse with mouth wash after every episode but do not brush until an hour afterwards and vomiting softens the enamel and brushing damages soft enamel. Ironically, brushing my teeth was also a morning sickness trigger. 🙄

purplemama1990 · 14/09/2022 17:21

All great advice given here, so I won't say too much except that in most cases the sickness tends to peak around 9 - 10 weeks and then will gradually improve in the next few weeks. So you're almost over the worst of it hopefully!!
