Pregnancy after colposcopy treatment

Hi all

Just looking to see if anyone is in/has been in the same boat. I'm currently 9+4 pregnant and had my first midwife appointment last week

A few years ago I had a couple of abnormal smears and was referred to colposcopy for treatment, once for biopsy and the other for Lletz. Midwife has referred me to a consultant at 14 weeks pregnant to measure my cervix etc as she said there's an "intermediate risk of preterm birth" but didn't really give me any info of what to expect. Does anyone have experience with this?

I had to have a vaginal scan of my cervix. Thankfully the remaining cervix was determined to be long enough, but if not, they might have put in a stitch.

This was 10+yrs ago, so things might have changed. But don't worry too much, it is quite common and they are taking care of you both.

I carried two healthy babies to full term after the Lletz procedure. 38+1 9lbs and 40+2 10lb 6oz.

@hedgehoglurker thank you so much for your reply! I was relieved when I saw the referral to the consultant as I knew it meant they'd keep an eye on me otherwise I'd just worry

Did you have a cope biopsy too or just the lletz? X

Yes, it was a lletz procedure for me. Is this your first baby? I had the lletz shortly after my first baby, then had the other 2 babies mentioned above.

Sorry I have just seen your reply!! Yes first baby for me so everything feels new and anxious x

I’ve just been last week, at 14 weeks indeed, for a cervix scan due to a loop/lletz procedure years ago.

It’s an internal scan and lasts 2 mins, just for them to measure the length of the cervix. Normal is between 3-4cm. I measured 3.5 and I’m not at risk of pre term birth.

If you’ll measure smaller you’ll get more scans or appointments to keep an eye on you, I think? It’s just a risk for pre term birth.

Ah, the consultant said bc I measure fine I don’t have to see him anymore. So I guess if it wasn’t I would have gotten more scans with him to keep an eye on the state of cervix during the pregnancy.

I had this; scan was fine on my cervix length and they said if it wasn’t they could do a stitch

Ahh thank you both! It's nice to hear from others who have experienced this as I feel you're not given much info before the appointment.

@Chdjdn @CristinaNov182 what treatment have you had previously? I had biopsy then small Lletz, were you both the same?

Yes it was biopsy then lletz

CristinaNov182 · 28/09/2022 20:35

I had biopsy at the same time as the procedure.

I had 2 types of abnormal cells, don’t remember the name but surface cells and deep tissue cells (I was at risk for 2 types of cancers yay - my fault, I stopped doing the Pap smear for 7 years prior to that) so they took a few cm wide by 10mm deep.

I think I saw both lletz and loop on the form they gave me, so I think these names mean the same thing? It was in 2017 so I don’t remember.

the consultant said if the op. would have been than 15mm deep he would have been thinking I could be at risk of preterm birth. He said at 10mm he wouldn’t have done a scan, but it was a request from another consultant that I had a discussion with before him.

the length of the tissue they took away doesn’t give you a risk, just how deep they went, that’s my understanding. If you know that you can check for yourself, but even if they took more, it’s still not a 100% risk, that’s why they want to have the scan and see.

Thank you both so much! Really appreciate it x
