Strep B

I have strep B and I'm just wondering if anyone knows what you do when you go into labour. So I've been told I have to go in and be on a drip for 4 hours before having my baby, basically my question is, if I start to have contractions etc, how long do I wait to phone the hospital to tell them? Do I do it right away or is it a case of waiting til contractions are closer together?

Hi, I had Strep B with my first. I was told to call triage as soon as contractions started or my water broke.

@Sallyh87 okay brilliant, thank you so much for this. I did think that's what I would do but I didn't want to be acting dramatic phoning right away if it was better to hold off

It depends how far along you are when testing positive. I tested again before delivery and it was negative so I continued with a normal labour (at home) and the midwives checked baby to make sure he didn't have a temperature etc. All was fine for us.

babybump1x · 11/09/2022 19:17

@greenerfingers I think it was 20 weeks I tested for it. Will they do another test at my next midwife appointment ? I'm nearly 38 weeks now and I have an appointment on Wednesday

If you ask for it they should, I really wanted a homebirth and demanded another test. I also was positive around 17 weeks and then nothing at 37/38 weeks. So they let it be. I really did not want to be strapped to an iv or have antibiotics administered as protocol. We did however keep an eye on our newborn for 24 hours to make sure he didn't have a temperature. He didn't x

Nobody told me what to do and when my husband called triage to tell them my waters broke he failed to mention the Strep B. Turned out having a really fast labour of only 4 hours. I never got the drip as turned up to the hospital very last minute and there was no time! Baby was fine and never contracted it

Please don’t take any chance with this OP it’s just not worth it.

I had strep B and was refused treatment. DS developed meningitis as a result and I developed sepsis and we were very lucky to come out of hospital alive. Go straight in and make sure they take you seriously. Most will be fine but there's no way of knowing and it's not worth the risk.

I’ve also got GBS and was told to call triage as soon as I went into labour.

In terms of the antibiotics, it’s just a dose rather than a continuous infusion. I don’t know the exact regimen, but it should only need to run for 15-30 minutes, you won’t be ‘tethered’ to an IV for your whole labour. My midwife said I could still have a water birth, I’d just need to keep the cannula out of the water.

Thank you all so much for the replies, really appreciate it

I was in labour last week and have GBS. They started me on antibiotic drip and then just topped it up every 4 hours until baby arrived. Then stayed in hospital for 24 hours min for baby to be observed xx

babybump1x · 12/09/2022 01:23

@MCMP13 this is good to know, did you contact triage right away when u felt contractions/water breaking ? Xx

i was induced (not due to GBS) so I was already in hospital however I was told before that I should contact them asap if my water broke as they’d need to start the antibiotics straight away. I was worrying constantly about it but turn out it wasn’t as bad as I thought! X
