hi!
i’ve started giving my 6 week old a bottle with formula just on a night and breastfeeding during the day. ive only just started last night after exclusively breastfeeding. at first when i gave her the bottle she was confused but then took it. while she was sucking on the teat her mouth was making a squeaky sound however she was still drinking. does this mean she didn’t have enough of the teat in her mouth or because she hasn’t grasped the full idea of it not being my nipple?

she woke once and only took 1oz and then woke a second time which was after 4 hours and then took 3oz. normally when i breastfeed she would wake every 2 hours. is 4oz very less for night? because i’m sure that’s meant to be the amount for one feed and not all night .. i don’t know wether it’s ok because it’s only been one night and my baby will ease into it.

You may need to try another teat if they aren't latching properly

Hello OP, I can't offer any advice (sorry) as I have only ever exclusively bf but I just wondered if you would get more help if you ask MNHQ to move the post to the infant feeding board? There's so many experienced lovely mums on there that might be able to offer insight? It was a god send for me with my first two babies 🙂 (that and the sleep board 🙄😂) best of luck

When you're breastfeeding we don't know how much milk baby gets at every feed. They don't follow set amounts in every feed and may get small amounts one time then lots more at another feed. They make up the oz they need over the 24 hour period and don't follow a schedule. If you were to breastfeed at night it may be that baby would be taking the same amount but you wouldn't know so wouldn't have the worry. It's always so hard to know and combi feeding can be really hard to get right early on but sounds like you're doing really well. There's also not loads of good information out there.

I know you mentioned the latch and it's likely baby is just getting used to a totally new way of feeding. In order to protect your breastfeeding relationship it's so important to pace feed baby with the bottle (there's lots of information online) and make sure anyone else who does that feed does the same. This reduces the risk of bottle preference.

There's also information on the website below on introducing formula at night:

If you have a local breastfeeding support group they'll be really knowledgeable on infant feeding and will be able to look at baby feeding on the bottle and support you to make sure there are no problems but it sounds like you're both doing really well.
